Bred in England and campaigned by Daniel Wildenstein's Allez France Stables, Steinlen won 20 of 45 career starts with ten seconds and seven thirds for $3,297,169 in earnings.
Trained by D. Wayne Lukas for more than three seasons in North America, Steinlen won the Breeders' Cup Mile, Arlington Million Stakes (G1) at Arlington Park, Bernard Baruch Handicap (G1) at Saratoga Race Course, Inglewood Handicap (G2) at Hollywood Park, and two other graded stakes events during his championship season.
Second to Miesque in the 1988 Breeders' Cup Mile at Churchill Downs, Steinlen also won the '90 Hollywood Turf Handicap (G1).
Overall, Steinlen won 16 stakes races in the United States and France during his career and set or equaled track records three times. During his victory in the 1990 Caesars International Handicap (G2) at Atlantic City, Steinlen ran 1 3/16 miles in 1:52.
"His popularity was not what it should have been for such a great racehorse," McGlothlin said. "But he experienced that every step of the way".
This was a remarkable race in which Steinlen made a daring and gutsy move inside the rail with a sixteenth of a mile to go to get the win by a length. This win cemented him in history as one of the premier milers on grass.
This win in the Arlington Million saw a great field including Great Communicator, winner of the Breeders Cup Turf, El Senor and the french filly, Lady in Silver. Steinlen made another gutsy and exciting move on the rail to get the win in front of the french filly by a length.
