I have been creating artwork all my life, dabbling in nearly every medium. I now work with a handful of media concurrently. My latest works have been created using a combination of oil pastel, watercolor, charcoal, and ink on heavyweight watercolor paper. I began using this method of combining materials five years ago. Before then, I rarely painted in anything but oil. As a young 'starving' artist, I could not afford to frequently purchase oil paint, so I began using less expensive materials. After much trial and error, error mostly, I began to discover that I enjoyed the results after mixing the different materials. My most recent series of finely detailed figurative work began to evolve from this process.
.For me, the artistic impulse is irresistible, but the creative process is rarely easy -- I often find it very challenging and stressful. Sometimes things come together quickly, in what feels like a spontaneous, flawless performance; more often, the heap of crumpled papers collecting in my recycling bin, erupting onto the floor, tells the whole story. The word I use most to describe my work is, 'practice.' I realize that I have a long way to go before I am 'happy' with my work. I create a new drawing almost everyday, and I am rarely happy with the results. But it's completely worth it. The bottom line is, I love what I do. It's incredibly rewarding when I get it right, and there is dormant potential in each crumpled failure.
