Katy Jurado

Katy Jurado (January 16, 1924 – July 5, 2002), born María Cristina Estela Marcela Jurado García in Guadalajara, Jalisco, was the first Mexican Academy Award nominated and Golden Globe winning actress.María Cristina Estela Marcela Jurado García born in Guadalajara, México into a wealthy family. Her father was descended from Spaniards from Andalucía; Katy inherited the Gypsy features of her grandfather. She moved with her family to Mexico City in 1927. She studied journalism before marrying mexican actor Victor Velázquez, who divorced in 1943. While working as a journalist, she caught the attention of director Emilio Fernandez, who offered her a role in the film La Isla de la Pasión. But Katy declined the invitation.She began acting in Mexican films starting after her divorce in 1943, with the movie No matarás. In 1945, she had her first success with the film Balajú. In 1948, her performance in Nosotros Los Pobres, opposite the well-known Mexican actor Pedro Infante, brought her fame. She subsequently appeared in many Hollywood movies (following in the path of Dolores del Rio and Lupe Velez), starting with The Bullfighter and the Lady, being discovered by John Wayne. In 1952, she starring High Noon (earning a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress). In the same year, she starred in the Luis Buñuel's box-office success El Bruto.During the fifties, she participated in several Hollywood productions such as Arrowhead, Broken Lance (for which she received an Academy Award nomination), The Racers, Trial, Trapeze, The Badlanders, One Eyed Jacks, Barabbas, Stay Away, Joe (opposite Elvis Presley), Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, The Children of Sanchez, and Under the Volcano. Her last film performance was in the Mexican film Un Secreto de Esperanza. She also co-starred in the short-lived television series a.k.a. Pablo.She was the first Mexican and the first Latina nominated for an Academy Award. Only two other Mexican actresses have been nominated: Salma Hayek as Best Actress in 2002 for Frida and Adriana Barraza as Best Supporting Actress in 2006 for Babel.Jurado was married twice, first to Mexican actor Víctor Velázquez, with whom she had two children, and later to actor Ernest Borgnine. She had a long friendship with the actor Marlon Brando for the rest of her life "Marlon asked me to marry many times, but for me my children were first . Su última película fue la producción mexicana Un secreto de Esperanza en 2002 de Leopoldo Laborde.Katy Jurado contrajo matrimonio en dos ocasiones, primero con actor mexicano Víctor Velázquez con el que tuvo dos hijos y en segundas nupcias con el también actor Ernest Borgnine de 1959 a 1963.Los padres de Katy Jurado García, no querían que fuera actriz cuando ella ambicionaba serlo. Nadie de su familia pensó que aquella chiquilla morena, de rasgos medio moros -hernecia de su abuelo, un español descendiente de moros-, se saldría con la suya. Y aún más: su color de piel que tanto le disgustara, fuera lo que propiciaría su éxito en el cine de Hollywood, y de otros países del mundo, incluyendo México.Katy tuvo una infancia bonita, económicamente desahogada. Era una chica hermosa, pues aún no dejaba la niñez cuando llamaba la atención de la gente. Su tipo sensual pronto interesó a los productores y directores de cine, ya que muchos se acercaron para hacerle ofertas. Uno de ellos fue Emilio "El Indio" Fernández, quién le ofreció un papel en el film "La isla de la pasión" (1941).A los 15 años de edad, frecuentaba mucho el Junior Club, un lugar de divertimento muy exclusivo en aquellos años, ubicado en la colonia Condesa. Ahí acostumbraba ir acompañada de sus primas. La sensual morena soñaba también con ser torera y mientras lo hacía, recibía infinidad de ofertas para debutar como actriz pero sus padres nunca dieron el consentimiento. Ni siquiera porque su mamá era cantante y trabajaba en la XEW. La señora llegó a cantar en el Palacio de Bellas Artes, acompañando a su hermano, el afamado compositor y músico don Belisario de Jesús García.Falleció en Cuernavaca a la edad de 78 años por insuficiencia renal y problemas neumológicos.Hasta la nominación al Oscar de Salma Hayek en 2002, Katy Jurado fue la única intérprete mexicana en aspirar a dicho galardón. Fue homenajeada en el festival internacional de cine de Guadalajara.
