Diane Denoir

About Me

Diane Denoir is maybe the best kept secret of South American music. In 1966, when she was only 19 years old she made her debut as a singer in Montevideo at the Primer Concierto Beat (First Beat Concert) a singular artistic experience that blended nonsense theatre, Alfred Jarry, Boris Vian and Slawomir Mrozek texts with bossa nova, chanson francaise, pop and avant garde. From then on, the press dubbed her as lady Beat. Her whispered vocals reminded the style of singers like Astrud Gilberto and Francoise Hardy with a touch of Nara Leao, but with a unique and strong personality. In that period she began an artistic relationship with Eduardo Mateo a composer, guitarist, arranger and singer who played a key role in the development of the new Uruguayan music. They played together bossa nova classics and Mateos own compositions, many of them expressly written for her. Diane recorded a few singles and only one album edited in 1972 that remained a collectors item. After more than 20 years living out of her country, Uruguay, she returned home, and in 1998 Diane Denoir name regained attention with the edition by the independent Label VadeRetro Records of "Ineditas Diane Denoir / Eduardo Mateo" a collection of never published songs (recorded in rehearsals and theatre and TV shows) with Eduardo Mateo. The record distributed only in Uruguay, Argentina and Japan is now sold out. The reissue of her 1972 album by the independent Argentinean Label Indice Virgen in 2005 showed that music recorded more than 30 years before had aged exceptionally well. Diane, now living in Spain, returned to the stage in March 2006 and showed to the enchanted audiences in two shows in Argentina & Uruguay that the years seemed not have passed in her voice and in her attitude. We are now preparing an all new record of Diane, with the same charme that her now classic album, but with a new touch. (text by Andres Torron).
