El Hakim the Poet

About Me

El Hakim the Poet ("The South's Best Kept Secret") is one of the most relevant and profoundly speaking poets of our time. Known in Memphis for his dynamic and thought provoking spoken word delivery El Hakim is definitely the poet that you don’t want to sleep on. Using his artistic gift of word construction El Hakim directly speaks on issues that relate to the condition of the world that we live in. The poetic sketches that are designed by this southern wordsmith have a consistent reputation for being loaded with the kind of raw intellectual substance that keeps the listener’s attention from beginning to end.
With a verbal projection comparable to that of a Southern Baptist Fire and Brimstone Preacher, El Hakim's content, or context ranges from intriguingly dramatic to realistically humorous. El Hakim's candid oral expressions are a definite treat for all that listen. Inspired by the works and words of great social commentators such as Gil Scott Heron, Curtis Mayfield, and Malcolm-X; El Hakim keeps the spirit of social awareness alive. In a time when pop culture promotes images that appeal to the lower of human nature, El Hakim stands firm in his commitment to create word art that motivates and entertains as well as provokes the listener to think.
Hustling as an independent artist, El Hakim can be found performing in venues from house-parties, to hole-in-the-wall cafe’s, clubs, to school and college campuses, barber/beauty shops to theaters…etc. As he puts it “anywhere people will listen” As a recording artist, El Hakim has had some underground success with his first recording, “11:59 in the Concrete Jungle” and his most recent recording project “The Charlie Marlow Commentary” (released summer ’07) is available now on his website www.elhakimthepoet.com . Coined by a local entertainment promoter as "The South’s Best Kept Secret” El Hakim says, “It’s time for the secret to be revealed.” From Memphis to everywhere, listen up for El Hakim the Poet.
