Sometimes, inexplicably, you will meet someone who is a Kindred Spirit, who seems to know you so well. She shares your passions. She is a friend to your soul. Another like you. Very rare, but even more special when it is three.... That is Bella.
Three gifted individuals profoundly connected, as soul friends, who take vocal harmony to new heights. The hair will stand up on the back of your neck. Bella is Kate Ballantyne, Lyn Bowtell and Karen O’Shea. All have very strong connections with Australia’s most prestigious talent search – the Toyota Star Maker Quest. Lyn, who is the main songwriter for the group, and Kate, are Star Maker winners, and Karen was a grand finalist Individually each vocalist shines, but their combined voice is nothing short of dazzling, bringing many an audience to its feet in sheer delight and appreciation since their formation in 2002.
That's what has been written. Now let us tell you our story.
We spent years watching each other perform, loving what each of us did and doing whatever we could to sing together. When Karen moved form Darwin and Lyn made the move from Toowoomba to Newcastle, we were all finally together. No-one could stop us singing together. We started doing gigs together in venues around Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens ; just for fun, just to be together, lunch, a couple of beers, a little bit of money and a lot of laughs. Oh and totally unrehearsed. One day a respected music industry pundit heard us and said ‘do you girls realize how good this is?’ You have to take this seriously". So we really tried to be more serious, but let's face it, it's three chicks.. it's us....... Anyway that conversation led us to record our first independent single ‘Tumbling Down’
In what the media described as a "meteoric rise", considering the short time we had been together, BELLA took out the Best Group award at the January 2004 Country Music Awrds of Australia . We were touted as one of the hottest new acts to arrive on the Australian music scene in years, and frocked it up for some of Australia’s major music festivals and major television networks.
As far as us girls are concerned “About A Girlâ€was the first of everything for us. The first original song we performed as a group, the first to be demoed for the album, the first recorded for the album, the first track on the album and the first single from the album. "About a Girl" is special to us in ways we could never describe in words. "About a Girl" may have won us our second Golden Guitar but in our eyes, it is really our first major success.
After performing with Jimmy Barnes and Troy Cassar-Daly at the Country Music Awards of Australia in 2005, we were stoked to be asked into the studio to re-record the tune with Jimmy and Troy. The classic "Bird on a Wire" was released on Jimmy Barnes' duets album later that year.
In September 2005, we were invited to travel to Northern Italy with a contingency of amazing Australian musicians. The ten day tour was a huge success . We discovered great food, great wine, great company and we also discovered alot about ourselves. Italy re-defined just how special our connection is. The second single from the album was really a "therapy" song written for Kate by Lyn and the fabulous Jerry Salley. Lyn has a way of getting to the heart of the matter, Jerry helped her put it together when she got too close and togther they turned Kate's life into a beautiful tune. A tune that everyone can relate to somehow. What a gift. Lyn is the heart that beats in Bella. "She Still Believes" won Lyn an APRA nomination for song of the year and Bella another golden guitar nomination. At the 30th annual MO awards held in Sydney, we shelved the vocal group award.
Bella are still performing around our home town of Newcastle and are in the process of putting together our second album . We are so excited and can't wait to put it together for you....... Sometimes the best things in life are worth waiting for.............
