About the GBOB CHALLENGE:
The very first GBOB World Final took place in December 2004. As a result, the winners, Spanish indie band Second, quickly secured a major recording contract with Warner Brothers label DRO Atlantic and a publishing deal with EMI Music. Since then they have gone from strength to strength and in 2007 they were special guests on Shakira’s world tour.
2005 World Final winners, grunge rockers Kopek from Ireland, have been signed by New York-based artist manager Thomas Valentino who steered Kid Rock to fame. The band have been recording new tracks in Los Angeles with top producer Danny Saber (U2, Marilyn Manson, David Bowie etc). Their recent debut single went top 20 in Ireland and their debut album is due out in Spring 2008.
Meanwhile, rocking hip hop outfit Heavy Mojo from the USA, the winners of the 2006 World Final, have subsequently been signed to a major recording contract by SRC Universal Motown. Band spokesman David Beame says: “The legendary Steve Rifkind saw a DVD of the band's performance at the GBOB World Finals in London and offered the deal on the spot!â€.
And as if to prove that smaller countries can compete with the big boys, the GBOB 2007 World Final was won by a band from GBOB’s smallest country – Boys In A Band from the Faroe Islands. We also expect big things in 2008 for this quirky young indie band – so watch this space!
GBOB has very quickly gained a reputation for helping to break new bands and we intend to carry on doing so.
From 16 countries in 2004 to 30 countries in 2007, GBOB – the world's biggest live talent competition for pop and rock bands – is getting bigger and better all the time.
Forget about artificial Pop Idol-style competitions and all the other glorified karaoke rubbish out there, this is the real deal for real bands playing real music - live. There are just two rules: no cover versions and no pre-recorded music.
Every year local qualifying heats and national finals take place in countries around the world, with the eventual winners of these going forward to The GBOB World Final in December 2008.
First Prize: $100,000 in cash and worldwide promotion
The world’s biggest live championship of popular music aims to search out and bring the best un-manufactured talent in the world to a wider audience.
