"Nomadic lifestyle of touring musician suits Carrigan fine"
By Doug Janz
Press Tempo Writer
[email protected] for Dan Carrigan is wherever he happens to be at the time. For a few recent months it was in Tallahassee, Fla., where he finished one tour and had some time before the next one started.
The singer/songwriter has called Asheville a home base, sort of, in recent years. He has friends in the area and finds the artistic/bohemian mindset to his liking. But before long (he's always) back on the road, often living out of his vehicle as he travels the country with his dog, Spot (an akita), and plays clubs, coffeehouses, street corners and wherever life takes him.“The whole concept of me living in one place is like asking people ‘What room do you live in in your house?’ It depends on your perspective,†he said.Carrigan has enough stories to fill a book (and someday he hopes to write one), from years of living on the road: strange experiences, interesting places, good people, ups and downs. His lifestyle distances him from mainstream society, he said, adding that some people consider him “a hermit, a heretic, while others glorify me or put me on a pedestal.â€Through it all, he writes, records and performs his songs — 75 to 100 of them published, and seven albums to his credit on his own OK-7 label. His subjects, as one would expect, vary greatly, and the songs often impart their wisdom through a sense of humor about life’s mundanities. This is definitely a man who enjoys a good laugh at life’s expense. His true passion is songwriting, and he values the lyrics and the story. The Carrigan experience will be on display tonight at Acoustic Coffeehouse, 415W. Walnut St. He’ll play at about 10. Adam Whipple opens the evening at 8 p.m. The Acoustic Coffeehouse Next Door stage will feature Appalachian reggae favorites Ras Alan & the Lions at 9 p.m. Admission to Ras Alan is $12.Carrigan’s latest album is “Wu.†Material was written and recorded in vans, boats, parks, people’s homes and various other places. One song, “the Brakes,†was recorded in Brevard, N.C., in six different locations — track by track. The keyboard part, played by local guru Ian Herrod (Subterranean, etc.), was recorded at the back of the Essence of Thyme in Brevard, during business hours, on an old Wurlitzer piano. The vocals were done by Carrigan in a park two blocks away, under a tree, as traffic rushed by.The song was written the previous summer when his brakes failed in Louisville, Ky. Herrod was guitarist in Carrigan’s band The Passionate Detachment while based in Asheville three years ago.Carrigan uses a digital recorder for whatever music he makes, and has the technical skills to multi-track the recording. Sometimes it’s Carrigan himself doing various instruments, but fellow musician friends often donate their parts and then Carrigan puts it all together. He is a self-contained music tour and recording studio, and has become somewhat of an expert at getting the right sound into the microphone under almost any circumstance, and for using the available dynamics to beneficial effect.“My master engineer on this last album has worked with some big people, and he asked me, ‘What do you want me to do with a couple of these cracks and pops.’ I told him it’s amazing this thing even exists at all. Just do the best you can.â€Spot is his constant companion. Carrigan calls him “my best bud. We have similar biorhythms because we’re always together. He’s been on the road with me his entire life and he’s been highly exposed to a lot of things. He’s definitely an asset.â€The lifestyle, Carrigan said, “is like ‘Being John Malkovich,’ sometimes ‘Forrest Gump,’ sometimes ‘The Fisher King’ at any given time. ... but I think that’s how life is.â€http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/view
