twitter.com/barbarabreyhanA very warm welcome to everyone. My name is Barbara Breyhan and I love different forms of dance, such as classical ballet, contemporary and folk dances. Interested in art forms of other cultures, ten years ago I started taking regular lessons of Spanish and Egyptian dances. With its Andalusian,Arabian and Gypsy origins,Flamenco arose from the streets, the bars and the Gypsy ghettos, speaking of immense tragedy and bitter poverty. Being characterised by improvisation, expressivity, deep emotions, the true Flamenco always reveals itself through the "duende". As to the Ballet Flamenco, its origins go back to the beginnings of the XXth century and it is characterised by choreographical elaborations of musical pieces by classical composers such as Manuel de Falla,Isaac Albéniz,Joaquìn Rodrigo,Georges Bizet and Nikolaj Rimsky-Korsakov.As to Raqs Sharqi (=Egyptian dance),I am interested in the work of the great Egyptian dance artist Suraya Hilal. Suraya Hilal's many years of research have clarified and redefined the three main genres of Raqs Sharqi: Sha'abi (="folk"), Baladi (="urban folk"), Sharqi (="classical"). Suraya Hilal has developed a holistic teaching which integrates the body with the music, the rhythm with the spirit of the dance, ancient and contemporary,Egyptian and universal, always honouring the cultural roots of the dance in Egypt. My Georgia:
..
** My family ancestors were Russian,Georgian,German,Polish and Armenian. My mother's relatives live in Georgia,a republic situated in Caucasia, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea.
Georgia is a rich country, with a very fertile soil, which brings grapes, tea and citrus fruits. The country lies on the crossroad of Europe and Asia. It forms a borderland between the East and the West and a meeting place for many cultures-although not always a peaceful place. Persians,Romans,Arabs,Mongols,Turks, and Russians have all left their sometimes violent traces in Georgian history. The land was christianized as early as in the fourth century and in spite of the oppression by various foreign powers during hundreds of years,it has managed to keep both its secular and religious traditions.
