I am a writer - novels, short stories, essays, articles, nonfiction books. I write about the things I care most about - medicine, books, family, children, knitting, food, travel.
My newest novel, THE MERCY RULE , is about a woman pediatrician with a complicated personal history and a complicated professional and family life. It's also about one of the hardest jobs I face in my work as a pediatrician: judging parents, and deciding who is (or is not) up to the job--and then, inevitably, turning that judgment on yourself.
I have also just completed editing The Real Life of a Pediatrician , which traces the careers of doctors handling unusual diagnoses, heartbreaking losses, and triumphant healing when children are the patients and so much is at stake.
So yes, I am also a pediatrician, and a professor of journalism and pediatrics at New York University, and the President and Medical Director of Reach Out and Read , a national literacy program dedicated to bringing books and a love of reading to over 3 million children living in poverty across America. I live in New York City, with my husband Larry Wolff, a professor of history at New York University, and our youngest son.
