Midnight Soul is a collection of late-night ballads performed by big names in '70s and '80s soul. The '70s are represented by three tracks from Barry White, including the epic "Never Gonna Give You Up," three from Teddy Pendergrass, three from Al Green, and three by Marvin Gaye. All the tracks the producers of the disc picked are fine, but the selections by Gaye are particularly well-chosen — there may not be three better midnight love songs than "Sexual Healing," "I Want You," and "Let's Get It On." The '80s represent a drop-off in quality; while the three tracks by Luther Vandross and Freddie Jackson are decent, they can't even come close to their forefathers. Still, anyone looking for a disc with an unbroken mood of late-night,soulful love could do a lot worse than picking this disc up.
