My name is Maria Daines and I'm a singer/songwriter from UK.
I write songs with my guitarist Paul Killington, to raise awareness for animal rights and welfare.
Today my heart has been broken. I read the story of a poor rescue dog in Valencia, Spain, who was sexually abused and brutally murdered when her shelter was attacked by vandals. The minute I read Regina's story and looked at the photographs of her battered body after she was tortured, I knew I had to start a campaign to gain justice for her death and encourage Spanish authorities to implement animal welfare laws and punish animal abusers.
This is Regina's story as translated from the email alert I received asking for help, sent by the volunteers who knew and loved her, these kind people gave Regina hope when she had nothing. The person or persons responsible for killing Regina must be identified and brought to justice. Animal abuse soon becomes human abuse, that's how it goes. Society must help to protect the voiceless.
'Regina'
Regina was rescued by the Protectora de Animales de la Ribera "RIBERCAN".
Please share so that everybody knows the type of atrocity that this animal in Spain endured. We cannot allow this to happen again, we cannot allow that they do not take us seriously, we cannot allow that the insane people that have done this do not pay for their horrendous actions, we cannot allow that an association that has been years fighting for stray animals must flee from its zone.
The photos are very strong, this is not the first time that an incident of this nature happens nor will it be the last one, in this protection orgnisation and many others. We would like to thank all those people who have put themselves in contact with us to support us, it helps so much.
Regina was a mastiff cross of 5 years of age, a charmer, easily frightened, yet little by little we obtained her trust so that she was to let us touch her and she even gave little kisses to us. She did not deserve what they did to her, lunatic personages, such cruelty and, it was not enough that they took three dogs from our facilities (two have appeared and another at a distance by the fence yesterday, Sunday), opening several cages, destroying several fences to get inside, but the savages, took our Regina, tied her legs with wire and abused her sexually, they introduced a fruit in to her anal orifice, they wildly struck her in the head until the poor animal did not have forces to resist and passed away in a pool of blood. This so cruel and such a terrible act of violence, we are devastated. We need your support through the sharing of this story through all the possible mass media forms.
We have decided to request aid to all the protectors of Spain to give a security to the dogs which we have in ribercan. We fear for their lives and ours, for the volunteers of the association. We need all the aid possible to be evacuating our shelter, since the cruel act of savagery this past Friday, lest these people may return to repeat another offence against our rescue animals, and perhaps it could be much worse. As voluntary workers of the animal protector of carcaixent I request aid to be able to save the life of the rest of our dogs that continue to live in the facilities. We do not leave and we can only hope that this will not happen again.
Thank you

STATEMENT OF SUPPORT FROM SYLVIE SHENE
Reading what happened to Regina breaks my heart. Thinking of this poor dog in her final hours I cannot help but cry. How do we convince the authorities that these thugs need to be stopped, so this does not happen to another innocent being? Certainly the person or persons who carried out this terrible cruelty could graduate to torturing and killing human beings.
Torturing an innocent being is a cowardly act, if these thugs are angry and need revenge they should confront their own anger and ask for help, but that requires courage and with this act they showed that they are cowards. The only way they will stop bullying and abusing innocent people and animals is if the authorities stop them.
I am originally from Portugal and I remember being traumatised as a little girl with the bull fights on TV, I used to wonder how a human being could hurt another being. People would say to me: It is part of the culture and I would reply 'screw the culture.' I love Portugal and Spain but I dislike their culture. If a culture is painful let it go. I am ashamed to come from a country where torturing an animal is allowed. And the reason this happens is because of child abuse. If children were not abused they would not have the need to torture others beings as they grow up, sometimes hiding behind a stupid culture. This just shows me that child abuse is a big problem in Portugal and Spain. Angry teenagers do not drop out of the sky. Society needs to educate parents to teach their children how to be kind and schools need to reinforce this message, in fact the whole community can help to educate young people and each other, by sharing a compassionate example of kindness towards animals and human beings.
Men in particular must learn to feel their own pain and stop passing it on to innocent beings. Do they not see that by passing anger on, by hurting others nothing can be solved? The pattern of abuse continues in a circle of pain enabling more people or animals to experience miserable suffering.
People must realise that we will only receive what we give and if we give pain that is what we will receive.
