This backing band is formed in Antwerp, Belgium, in the spring of 2008. The group featured Daddy Radics (drums), Alion (bass), Double P (keyboards) and Eddy (guitar). The band name they travel under and back artist is taken from "the original sweet Jamaican poor people powder snack" called ASHAM. (Check out the 'Asham... explain it' blog!!)
Daddy Radics and Double P were previously active as part of the calabash-set up (an other Antwerp reggae band). They played at several Belgian reggae events, opening for international acts such as Linton Kwesi Johnson, Cecile, Max Romeo, the Ethiopians and Eek-a-mouse.
Alion had gone through a similar apprenticeship and was at the same period very active in reggae-bands like Deep Culcha, Mighty Pirates, Zionyouth and Vintage; with these bands he played on different Belgian festivals and openings for international acts like Black Uhuru, U-Roy, Dub Syndicate and Desmond Dekker.
During the last years these musicians had almost the same reggae-way and played extensive concerts, showcases or recording-sessions with the following artists: Omar Perry (JA), Rohan Lee (JA), Erick Judah, Yosa 'Lion', Deep Culcha, Mighty Pirates, Ragga Yves, Raggamuffin' Whiteman, Mika, RionsNoir, FactorX, Vintage, Rasta Bob, Lion-I (JA), 3T, Youthopians, R.O.C.-crew, Zionyouth, Prince Abdoulai, Irie Bash, …
In the summer of 2007, it was the first time Daddy Radics, Alion and Double P had been teamed up as part of the recording-sessions for Rohan Lee (JA).
That was the 'magic' moment!!
The three formed a friendship that turned into a musical partnership and formed their own reggae backing band!
Together with multitalented guitar-player Eddy and his rich musical experience this band is ready with the promise of 'yet more to come'!
The ASHAM-band consists of 4 to 8 members depending on artist and what is called upon. They collaborate with musicians and song writers, for live and studiowork and enhance the performance of any Roots-, Modern Roots- and Dancehall artist with its experience and professional expertise. The ASHAM-band is the new sound around…!
