Lisa McCallum:Sweet, soulful, passionate and entertaining is the best way to distill the impact of Lisa McCallum’s vocal performances. Born in Oakville, Ontario, Canada, Lisa has grown into a strikingly talented Country songwriter and artist. Her stellar blend of folksy charm, genuine sincerity and emotional charge has made her a promising performer worth keeping an eye on.This energetic young woman has come a long way since her humble beginnings as a little girl singing wherever she found an audience. Whether it was family events, competitions, high school functions or at church, Lisa sang wherever and for whomever she could. She started taking piano lessons at a young age and learned to play so she could accompany herself. At only 13 years old, Lisa wrote an original song and presented it for the first time at her local church coffee house. Receiving many positive reviews, she has continued to work at the craft of songwriting. When asked why she insists on writing original material for herself, she responded by saying, “I feel that songwriting is an essential part of being an artist. There is so much more purpose and meaning behind the lyrics when an artist can present a song they have written themselves.â€While still in high school, Lisa became a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) after reading that Carolyn Dawn Johnson had done the same thing. Lisa adds, “I’m constantly trying to educate myself on what professional writers have done and trying to follow in their footsteps.†After graduating high school in 2002, she attended Humber College in Toronto where she majored in Vocal Performance. During her three years there she performed in a live “Hip Hop†band as the lead vocalist (www.wordpeople.ca) and she also made it to the Top 100 of Canadian Idol in its first season. Upon graduating Humber, Lisa felt it was time to take the next step in her career, which meant moving to Nashville like so many of her idols had done. She saved up as much money as she could and headed south in September of 2005 after being encouraged by members of NSAI to do so.Just prior to moving to Nashville, Lisa ran across the Website of Murrah Music Corporation and decided to send a letter of inquiry to Lissa Murrah, one the company’s vice presidents. Being intrigued by the uniquely written letter, Murrah brought the young writer to the attention of company vice president, creative, Dan Hodges. Hodges began meeting with Lisa and in a matter of a three months was instrumental in her being signed to Murrah Music Group’s ASCAP affiliate, Castle Street Music, Inc.As Lisa continues to write and perform, she knows that accomplishing her goals as an artist are much closer now. Her ambition, determination, unique sound and natural ability will no doubt take her the rest of the way.
