The Vogues

About Me

Formed in 1960, The Vogues were a four man vocal group from Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh, consisting of Bill Burkette (lead baritone), Don Miller (baritone), Hugh Geyer (first tenor) and Chuck Blasko (second tenor). Originally calling themselves 'The Val-Airs', they changed their name when they were signed to the Co & Ce label. In 1965 they released "You're The One", that quickly rose to the number 4 position on Billboard's Hot 100. The group's second effort, "Five O'clock World" continued the rock-folk sound and also reached number 4, and remains popular to this day. The group's next few attempts, including "Magic Town" and "The Land Of Milk and Honey" were not quite as successful, but still managed to edge into the top 40 in 1966 and 1967.
In 1968, The Vogues were signed to major label Reprise Records where they teamed up with producer Dick Glasser and the talented arranger Ernie Freeman (and the group of pro L.A. studio musicians now known as 'The Wrecking Crew') to create a successful string of hits. They first reached the charts again with a middle of the road ballad called "Turn Around, Look At Me" that reached number 7 and sold over a million copies. Staying with the lighter, more sophisticated style they loved best, The Vogues kept the hits coming when they took a cover of a Bobby Helms hit, "My Special Angel" into the Top 10 in September 1968. As they toured the club circuit, the group had several more Billboard hits over the next two years, including "Till", "No, Not Much", "Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)", "Moments To Remember", and "Woman Helping Man". In 1970, The Vogues left Reprise and relocated to the Bell label where a few singles were released, and finally ending their successful chart run on the 20th Century label in 1975.
The Vogues had a total of 14 Billboard Hot 100 Hits and a total of 18 Billboard AC Hits. The Vogues were inducted into The Vocal Group Hall Of Fame in 2001.
