It was founded by John Sikes (1816-1867) in 1860.As of the 2000 census, the city population was 16,992, making it the second most populous city in Missouri's 8th Congressional district behind Cape Girardeau (population 35,349). -By way of Interstate 55 Sikeston is close to the halfway point between St. Louis and Memphis and Interstate 57 begins in Chicago and ends in Sikeston.- The city of Miner borders Sikeston to the east. As of 2005, the Sikeston-Miner area had a combined population of approximately 20,000 people.- People from Sikeston -Sikeston is the birthplace of congressmen Kenny C.
