DAVID SEGAL INTERVIEW Dec 07':
The Sprawl of Sound -
The Double Fisted Underground Says
"Suck My Disco"
Q- David Segal
&
A- Stefan/dirty-Lo/Stephen Rivera
Q - 01 Tell us about the origins of Double Fisted: what was the impetus for it and what was/were the guiding principle(s)? Please provide the basic facts (when and where it started, which venues hosted it, etc.).
A - 01 Originally, it was created to send a rift through empty space. Nothing around seemed to hold the sounds or momentum felt by us, nor did they combine the music in a complete stream the way we did... Yeah, some might argue, but you never heard the Gun Club mixed with a disco track until you stopped by the Avalon for a double dose of the fisters, and when I say disco, I don't mean that shit you want to associate the word disco with. If I have to explain it, it's too late, bottom line is I think we have earned a little bragging rights, especially when it was so widely re-created. So much in fact, I almost forgot we were at the epicenter of that wave. You could not find a better, various, strength bound mix in town. As soon as computers made things a bit easy, every jokester on the block with some good looks and a crowd seemed to have the same disillusion. That they started this. I'll leave it to the boys to explain our venues (The Avalon) and the basic fact, we rock.
Q - 02 Has the personnel remained the same throughout DF's run?
A - 02 YES
Q - 03 What have been the highlights of DF?
A - 03 I enjoyed the Jack n Coke with a Corona backer... combined with brothership and all the screaming and yelling. Let's face it, without the free drinks, and the overall reciprocation of appreciation from the crowd, deejaying is just not worth the time it takes to drink for the price of a beer.
It's our way of feeling life.
Q - 04 What have been the low points?
A - 04 Losing oneself to the grip of a night life,
then escaping only to find you are going to be held tighter,
if you're not careful, you can find your self on a merry go round,
I want off.
Q - 05 What's the weirdest thing that's happened at a DF event?
A - 05 All of our friends began to fuck each other without any regard for who each other use to date... or wait, I think that was just me n Poppa? Before we knew it, we had this rare cross breed of beardos and hookers. I think Scotty enjoyed watching.
Q - 06 Why did you decide to end it now?
A - 06 For me, it just seems like it is the time. My business is taking up more of my mental space, and quite frankly, really what am I going to gain? 200 more my-space friends? Please, all 21 - 23? fuck it, I have no concrete need for it anymore.
I love the outlet, and I love doing it with the boys who have put the time in to learn, and who intern have even given me quite a few lessons.
We together are so busy in our daily lives that it seems almost like work to get into the same room.
That right there is a pretty good indicator, My professional world is taking off, and it is time to move into another phase, we gave our town a shove, and also know when to show them how to dissolve. . .
I mean Seriously, how much longer can I keep this up? The duration of this has only burned time, I have made no major accomplishment, other than you recognize my name, and I in turn receive free beer & praise from time to time. Maybe we have just been pushed back? To tell you the truth, I think we are holding ourselves back by nurturing this obsession. Yet, that is the beauty of this thing, if you listen deep enough, it is all right there. I say we all make some songs about it and move on with our lives before we forget what this feels like. Maybe I'm the problem?
Q - 07 How will THE OTHER SIDE differ from DF?
A - 07 I think we are going to have to think out side the box on this one personally, only to avoid becoming the typical innovator who refuses to keep reinventing sound. After all, that is what we set out to do in the first place. I would hate to think we have found ourselves trapped. However, good music is just that, good. So you can count on us doing at least that.
Q - 08 What DJs do you hope to book for TOS?
A - 08 I don't care. I prefer friends I've gathered along the way, I do not have another five years to gain the approval of overrated DJs. Clearly I can see the current trend is to book any asshole with a crowd, regardless of talent or skills. I would still love to have James Murphy at the Avalon. After all, I was there...
Q- 09 Do you see any other OC/LBC/LA events/nights that are on the same wavelength as yours?
A - 09 I see some things happening in N.Y. & S.F. and yes, various events in Los Angeles. Love Fingers, Pubes, Love Break, & Heading Home are behind some of those events and you may find them along side us in the future?
Q - 10 Why do you think disco's enjoyed a resurgence in popularity over the last 3-5 years? I mean, besides the Internet.
A - 10 I think you mean disco rock, and I feel it is because a generation has matured, and quite simply slowed down a bit to the slow drone of a bass line that accompanies the general feeling that you're quite sexy, even if you seem to forget it prior to our mix.
That is really what the whole thing is about. If you cannot seem to evoke sexuality,
then just forget it; you won't last.
Q- 11 How would you describe the typical DF regular, if there is such a thing?
A - 11 This would be my best attempt at giving you a glimpse into the lifestyle. It all began with a lack of attention from those who should have been giving it to us all along, this, transcending into early movements on cardboard, dawning parachute pants only to trade them in for the infamous Ridell skate shoe to then wind up in roller rinks, and then to backyard parties, with heavy-metal upbringings, twisted with yacht rock in your over-stimulated guardian's vehicle, and I say guardian due to the fact that it just might not be who you planned on riding with. From there you can expect to join a band, and excel in various instruments, and might even have participated in quite a few talent shows at a young age. Your babysitters were misfits and proved quite capable of seducing you; and the best part would be that it was welcomed. As you become aware of your world, you desire more attention, so that recorder you use to play solos in the choir with gives you the strength to walk up to a bar owner and say that indeed you are the next big earner. You go so far as to reach out to who and what ever you desire. That is the mark of a Double Fister, taking chances, and growing from the mistakes, as the need for attention declines, a person naturally will come through the other side, then throw it all away as if to say, 'Thank you for making up for what I deemed missing. It has arrived.
The Double Fisted Underground is for everyone who ever needed someone.
Q - 12 Which tracks from your bags are making dancers go crazy lately?
A - 12 All of them. Pretty bold right? Anyone who sticks around to listen to what I collect must be fucking crazy.
Q - 13 If you had to use one sentence to persuade someone who's never attended DF to come to TOS, what would you say?
A - 13 It is for anyone with a sexy attitude and a tolerance... if you're sexy and ya know it, you're invited; I don't care if you're pretty...
