After years and years of playing other people's stuff in other people's living rooms/orchestras/the odd pub, I've decided this year to get the finger out and start writing my own material. Nothing ready for studio time yet, so I've put up two covers for now. I'm a life coach so am practising what I preach about taking the first step..!
1st track's a cover of 'Into Dust' by Mazzy Star; I adore this tune. Track 2 of course is Cohen's Hallelujah, Buckley version. Think this was the 1st tune I ever recorded and you can tell - playing it way too fast. If I was redoing it would slow it down and add harmonies and maybe some other instrumentation. But there again - I didn't know when I did this (or sang it at a singer-songwriter night) that it's considered the singer-songwriter cliche to beat all cliches and is frowned upon on such nights. ("No Hallelujah..?? DENIED!") Plus, doing no interpretation of a track when covering just makes you a Stars in their Eyes contestant... So writing's still the goal.
By the way, if you're interested in life coaching at all, I've got a profile for my company, Soul Ambition at http://www.myspace.com/soulambitioncoaching . Music industry info. on those blogs and even more on the main site - http://www.soulambition.co.uk .
