I am a New York-based freelance photographer who specializes in cityscapes, scenics, still-life, figure-skating and animal/wildlife photography. Both of my parents were recreational painters, and I spent my childhood poring over their art books. After realizing I had inherited absolutely none of their skills as painters, I became fascinated by my Dad's AUDUBON and NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC magazines, and by age 10 was shooting with my own 110 Instamatic (which I still own!). I began studying photography formally in high school and minored in it in college. After briefly pursuing a career as an actress and dancer after college, I began professionally shooting figure-skating photography in my mid-20s. I more or less fell into this field, having been a fan since high school. During the skating boom of the 90s I spent most of my time travelling all over the East Coast shooting the many competitions and exhibitions that sprang up at this time. I was a regular contributor for major skating publications such as AMERICAN SKATING WORLD, PATINAGE and TRACINGS, and my work was featured in event programs, dance magazines and several skating books, including an e-book written by Shimmy editor Tania Gressell (see Friends, below). Unlike many skating photographers of that time, my work was influenced more by my theatrical background than by the photography found in top sports magazines. I was heavily influenced by the work of dance photographers, such as Martha Swope, and loved to capture the feeling of the human body in motion. As the skating boom came to an end around the end of the decade, I began to segue back into the areas of photography that had originally attracted me - scenics, cityscapes and landcapes. A couple of my favorite places in the world to photograph are my hometown of New York (I'm currently very interested in preserving images of the Coney Island of generations of New Yorkers, as it now faces massive redevelopment in the next few years) and Fire Island, a barrier island off of Long Island. I am particularly drawn to the interplay of light and shadow, and love to create a textured, painterly quality in my work. (Still a frustrated painter at heart, I guess!) Some of my strongest influences, particularly when it comes to urban photography, are people like Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine. In recent years I have begun to be particularly drawn to animal/wildlife photography. An animal-lover for as long as I can remember, I strive to capture what makes each species that I shoot unique, and to capture the essence or spirit of an animal, much as you would in a human portrait.I sell my work for art/decor and editorial and commercial stock. My website is Liza Dey Photography , and I have two online stores where I sell items featuring my work.
