“You know I had to come through and show love. I see the movement and it looks like you are fully focused. Keep at it 110%. Let the game know who you are and make your voice heard. You already knowâ€, said music producer Chris X on her myspace page. These words of encouragement stem from a long tradition of music that has been passed down from generation to generation in her family. Today she is here to declare that the “Female Langston Hughes is here.â€
Xi Guevara gave herself that name after a student in one of her classes did a presentation on Ernesto Che Guevara. As a member of the National Forensics League and a person who booked Vice President nominee Rosa Clemente, shaken hands with Senator Hillary Clinton and mingled with politician and cultural critic Kevin Powell, she calmly states, “I am a revolutionary before I am an artistâ€.
While born and raised in the Bronx, Guevara incorporates her love of all music styles into her creativity. From her sultry vocals, it's easy to envision Guevara singing at the Cotton Club during the Harlem Renaissance. While most of her songs have a modern appeal, her style can be compared to female jazz greats like Billy Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Dorothy Dandridge. After interning with Atlantic Records and The Wendy Williams Experience at 107.5 WBLS FM, volunteering for LIFEbeat and writing for a Caribbean Lifestyle Newspaper called Street Hype, Guevara is embarking on a promising journey as an entertainer. Her single “Out The Doorâ€, a tackles the dark side of relationships. It displays a verbal war between two lovers, a woman and a man in an abusive relationship. The two are both victims of domestic violence showing points of views of both women and men.Whether it’s performing at Walt Disney World, Madison Square Garden or winning the HBO Slam Poetry competition at her college SUNY Potsdam, Guevara always feels like the stage is her home.Guevara's new album Nirvana, Yours and Mine touches on many different subjects such as domestic violence, the 2008 election, and trying to make it in the music industry. The heartwarming song “Anything†is a story of a devoted Guevara in a relationship with another musician who is trying to make it big. The couple eventually makes many sacrifices to stay together on their quest to become famous. In a music business of synthesized hooks and degrading messages, “Anything†is a breath of fresh air displaying lyrics that are emotional, tangible and real.Award winning soprano vocalist Xi Guevara, who was honored by NYCHA Chairman John Martinez in 2000 frequently performs with Soka Gakkai International at the Culture Center and Temperamental VIM.
