About Me

Betty Maddox and Joan Stein have been making beautiful music together since 1972, when Joan, a former school teacher who left her job when she found it was "too dominated by men," rescued Betty from a macrame cult called The Macramaniacs.Together, they lead children through an array of confusing topics, like Alan Alda, The Vietnam War, Tails, Cigars, Alcoholic Drinks, and Mod Podge with the help of the Body Box, the Giggle Patch, and a wacky owl with a chip on his shoulder. Now's a good time to mention they are lesbians. In 2005, Betty and Joan decided to bring back their hit regional television show, "Free To Be Friends," to the stage of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater . Seven hit months later, the girls decided to go downtown, and take their show to the NY International Fringe Festival . Click here to make reservations for this rip-roaring hootenanny featuring progressive social themes.
