Blang is an independent record label based in East London and a monthly live underground music night which Joe Murphy (of Sergeant Buzfuz) started at London’s 12 Bar Club in Soho in 2002. In its early days the Blang night featured many acts from the New York antifolk scene (eg Jeffrey Lewis, Lach, Diane Cluck and Thomas Truax) and has also played host to The Broken Family Band, Chris TT, The Television Personalities, Misty’s Big Adventure, John Otway, The Wave Pictures, The Research, The Rebel, Herman Dune and the legendary Sky Saxon. As well as helping launch the careers of David Cronenberg’s Wife and Milk Kan. Many underground acts made their debut live performances at Blang including David Cronenberg’s Wife and Emmy The Great.
In 2004 Joe hatched a plan to launch a Blang label, to be kicked off with a compilation CD featuring 26 acts who had played at Blang. This CD ‘Fruit Machine’ was the label’s first release (BLANG1) in October 2005. In 2006 JJ Crash (of Lucy’s Diary) stepped onboard to help drive Blang forwards and the label signed up some of the shining stars from the Blang nights. Since then Blang has released 16 singles and albums from David Cronenberg’s Wife, Milk Kan, Sergeant Buzfuz, Filthy Pedro, Malcolm Kaksois and deXter Bentley. In December 2008 Blang earned the accolade of Label of the Week from BBC Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens on his “In New Music We Trust†show.
