My name is Willie Martinez and welcome to the MySpace page
for my group La Familia Sextet!
Our ensemble features my original compositions and arrangements, as well as those
of the members of La Familia, all top notch composers in their own right, along with
new interpretations of a few familiar themes from the past.
La Familia Sextet's music is a perfect example of how the marriage of Afro-Caribbean rhythm
and the harmonic structure and improvisational nature of jazz continues to remain fresh, exhilarating and timeless. The baritone sax and trombone front-line in our group is a
unique treatment for this genre and, combined with our infectious rhythm section,
smokes to the very last note!
After Winter, Spring is the long awaited follow-up to
Family, our well recieved 2006 debut recording.
We stand upon the shoulders of Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Jerry Gonzalez's Fort Apache, and Hilton RuÃz to present music that represents the very best in
Real New York Style Latin Jazz.
Join us as we take you on a musical journey that explores a singular style of music that continues to thrive and flourish on the streets of
the Big Apple, from Alphabet City to East Harlem!
