Prior to 1979, Punk rock in Italy held a secondary approach to musical recording in an attempt to replicate this phenomenon that was gaining ground in the UK and USA, there were only a few musicians and album producers that were following this trend and that only months before were producing other types of music. Between the periods of 1978 and the beginning part of 1979 when Punk rock took hold in Italy, you started to see teens especially on weekends, dressing as such and expressing a lifestyle through Punk music especially in many central north Italian cities. One of these teens was a devote rock music appassionato by the name of Tony Mancini who even at the tender age of 14, had a considerable rock album collection that inspired the idea to form and later influence his band.
In 1979, he performed at a small club in Livorno with his musical band called “Mal di Testaâ€. A few months latter and after having met a drummer called Luca Del Bimbo at school, he decided to form and create a real Punk band. Together they recruited a bass player named Roberto Turchi from another Livorno based Punk band called “Young Visonaries†along with Marco Benucci who knew only a few guitar notes, but this didn’t really matter, attitude was the key ingredient and Marco had enough to spare.
A repertoire of about 15 pieces was compiled in about 1 month and led the band to become ready for their first public concert début. In only several months small crowds of Punks, Skinheads and youth of various cults attended these concerts in view of getting together and having a good time.
This was the case of the gathering at Livorno’s Casa della Cultura whereby a Punk crowd destroyed everything in their path, likewise at the former church of San Zeno in Pisa where the police was called in and that of the Arci Club in Pontedera where clashes happened in the streets whereby even a priest was assaulted.
Many concerts took place between 1980 and 1981 at the “Teatro Tenda†in Florence in view of a group called Discharge along with the roman group Shotgun Solution and Raf Punk of Bologna where a group called Traumatic along with Syd Piercecchi of CCM acted as a backing-vocal, giving way to their best performances. Likewise in this same period the Traumatic band was invited to play at the Tilt di Casalecchio in Bologna for a series of concerts whereby many other local and distant bands came together to form the first Punk music concert in Italy.
It is a pity that after these events, Marco Benucci abandoned the music stage for personal reasons. From that point onwards the band could not find an adequate guitar replacement that would be both full-time and stable in this capacity. In any event and with the help of a guitar player from CCM, Domenico Petrosino, the Traumatic proceeded with their concert activity. It is worthwhile to remember certain dates at the “Odessea 2001†in Milan and the concert held in piazza Santa Croce in Florence where the Traumatic held its concerts in front of more and more enthusiasts without any commercial ambition but only to have a good time. In this same period with Domenico at the guitar by request of Federico Guglielmi (a jornalist and Italian Punk expert) and now at the Real Sound studios in Riccione, several songs were recorded to join into a compilation with other Italian Punk groups that were apparently never published.
After a period of time and being that it was almost impossible to find a stable guitarist, a decision was made to have Roberto play the guitar in view of his distinct way to play bass and approach to play instruments with that “guitarist way†his move to guitar was very natural and finalized with a winning touch. The base player role went to Fabrizio Vastola who had already played with Roberto while in the Young Visionaries and with Tony “Rat†Mancini while with the Mal di Testa. With this line-up the group recorded various songs to become the compilation entitled “Senza Tregua†or “Without Truceâ€. The group continued to play about sporadically but only to coincide with the twilight of the magical Punk rock era in Italy… Being that the band never officially dissolved itself and that Anthony and Roberto spent most of the 80’s playing in a group called “The Invisible Bandâ€, they dedicated much of their remaining time to emulate 1960s themes of garage punk bands in the USA. As testimony to that period and what was mentioned, the event is also documented via a video clip of a concert held in Marina di Pisa that is also visible on You Tube. At the end of the 80s and throughout the first half of the 90s, Anthony and Roberto returned on stage with use of the name “Traumatic†for certain concerts. In 1998 Anthony finally decided to publicize an album that contained many historic band songs that were already recorded in the years before that also permitted him at the end of that year, to create a private editing of a theme called “Last Kids from Nowhereâ€.
From that time onward the band reentered the musical world to play in concerts while employing disparate musical components until last year’s acquisition of drummer Andrea “BAG†Baglieri along with Francesco Rosi at the guitar, Fabio “Puccio Sterza†solo guitar and the return of Roberto at the bass allowing the band to reconsolidate and reach its best musical formation. After participating in the Reject of Society Festival in Genova, Luca Del Bimbo also returned to join the band as its drummer and just in time to engage in a new single track recording.
