I am a culture bearer, upholding the culture of the Yoruba people in the new world. Especially, bringing it up to this northern state, where it has been under-represented. I do this through the playing of the Ilu (drum). Here in Alaska I have had the honor to play my music for many cultural events such as, Spirit Days, the largest Alaskan native cultural event in Anchorage and Celebration, the bi-annual Alaskan native gathering in Juneau, also many more public events such as, Juneteenth, OceanFest, Girdwood Forest Fair, The Alaska Heritage Center, Spenard jazz Fest and many other local events.
As far as my playing, I have influences from around the African diaspora, that is Africa, the Caribbean, as well as, the Americas. My playing is diverse. I listen to masters ranging from the great traditions of Africa to the great American jazz drummers. One of the highlights of my career was when I performed at the pre-Grammy ceremonies in Manhatten, NY.I have taught and performed extensively in the Anchorage School District. Currently, I teach a Title 1 afterschool program.
