play from the soul...and the gut!

About Me

Top prize winner of the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition and Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition, the Aviv String Quartet has performed across the globe, from Cape Town to Stockholm, and from China to Brazil. Critically acclaimed performances at Wigmore Hall in London, the Louvre in Paris, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Wien Konzerthaus, Zurich Tonhalle, Tel Aviv Museum, and the Library of Congress in Washington DC have been followed by recording contracts with Naxos and Dalia Classics.
The quartet has collaborated with artists such as Yefim Bronfman, Boris Petrushansky, Anton Dressler, Jorg Widmann, Yehuda Hanani, Toby Appel, Gilles Vonsattel, Nicholas Baldeyrou, Boris Berman, Pierre-Laurent Aimard and James Tocco, and celebrated its tenth anniversary with a Shostakovich cycle at the 2007 Verbier Festival.
Most recently, the quartet recorded three quartets of Erwin Schulhoff for Naxos and completed a month-long tour in North America and Israel. Summer at the Kfar Blum festival in Israel will be followed by concerts during the fall season in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Sweden and the United Kingdom - including two appearances at Wigmore Hall in October - and the complete cycle of Shostakovich quartets in Canada.
Formed in Israel in 1997, the Aviv String Quartet counts among its mentors Isaac Stern, the Alban Berg Quartet, Walter Levin, Henry Meyer, and Ben-Zion Shamir.
Aviv means "spring" in Hebrew - signifying new beginnings, a fresh outlook, the season of birth, and the shedding of coverings to reveal true nature, sharper definition and heightened awareness.

Sounds Like: Who are we to say? Will you tell us?
As a quartet, we are greatly inspired and influenced by the Amadeus, Alban Berg and Borodin quartets, and we've found, over the years, that we get special pleasure playing and have a particular affinity for Shostakovich, Beethoven and Bartok. Not that we don't love playing Janacek, Dvorak, Debussy, Ravel, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Haydn etc... But these three composers' unique languages seem to reach nearest to our collective musical soul. We would hope that we sound close to what these great composers envisioned - of course knowing that our own personalities, individually, and as a group, will be present.
Please feel free to leave us comments. We are always curious to have new ears.
