Layout by CoolChaserHistory: Clara Barton and a circle of acquaintances founded the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C. on May 21, 1881. Barton first heard of the Swiss-inspired International Red Cross Movement while visiting Europe following the Civil War. Returning home, she campaigned for an American Red Cross society and for ratification of the Geneva Convention protecting the war-injured, which the United States ratified in 1882 (http://www.redcross.org/museum/history/brief.asp)

What is the Red Cross? The Jackson County chapter of the American Red Cross is comprised of 3 full time workers and over 400 volunteers. Services and classes are offered in wide variety of areas. The Jackson County Chapter also oversees the Jennings and Scott County Red Cross.

Disaster Services: Red Cross responds to both national emergencies such as Hurricane Katrina and also to local disasters such as flooding, house/apartment fires, the aftermath of tornados, snowstorms, etc. Red Cross offers assistance to families affected to help them get back on their feet. Red Cross also offers canteen service to firefighters and emergency service workers by bringing food and drinks to them as they are not able to leave a disaster scene for many hours in order to keep them nourished and hydrated. Red Cross also can open and operate a shelter within the county depending on the need. Classes are offered in Disaster services to train both staff and volunteers. Volunteers & staff are on call 24 hours a day.

Health / Safety Services: Red Cross offers many classes to help prepare oneself for many medical emergencies and how to prevent injuries. Classes offered include Adult, infant, and child CPR, first aid, Emergency Responder, life-guarding, baby sitter classes, Basic Aid Training, among others.
The Red Cross also operates First Aid stations at local community events such as the County Fair, Oktoberfest, Fort Vallonia Days, and the Muscatatuck Music Festival.

Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES): If a family of a military service member needs to contact that member in an emergency (death in the family, serious illness, birth of a child, etc.) they can contact the Jackson County chapter of the Red Cross. Trained staff and volunteers case workers are on-call 24 hours a day to take the call. Red Cross gets the needed information, verifies the information, and can begin the process of getting the message to Red Cross workers stationed both state-side and overseas with the military.

Bio-medical Services: Red Cross blood donation sites supply local hospitals with a large percentage of their blood supply which is used in emergencies, surgeries, and for plasma.

Want to volunteer? Volunteers are used in all of the above categories. Red Cross offers all relevant training before asking volunteers to perform any tasks.
Red Cross also has volunteers that assist in the office, serving on boards, and with fundraisers.

Please call the Red Cross office for more information at 522-3888.
The Red Cross also is a non profit organization. Funds for Disaster services, comfort kits, first aid stations comes primarily from fund raisers and donations. Please call the Red Cross office if you are willing to donate at (812) 522-3888.
