About Me

Founded in 1995 by Benedict G Puglisi, Atelier Puglisi has grown to become one of Australia's premier centres for stringed instruments, luthiers and clientele, both national and international.

Atelier Puglisi is a collective of makers, dedicated to the art of stringed instrument making, repairs & restoration. It has since established itself as one of Melbourne & Australia's leading centres for repairs, restorations & sales of Double Basses, Violins, Violas & Cellos from the beginner to the professional musician.

The extensive clientele extends to not only the local string playing community, but nation-wide enthusiasts, professionals & an ever-increasing international clientele.

Expert instrument makers from around the world have worked in this workshop. Makers from Switzerland, Mexico, Belgium, England, Holland & Italy, as well as excellent locally grown talent. An emphasis on the training of young instrument making enthusiasts has always been at the heart of the workshop.

With a further emphasis on the highest quality possible, Atelier Puglisi has consistently provided musicians of every genre & level with affordable, ethical & beautiful workmanship.

After graduating from Box Hill College of Tafe music faculty, Ben studied at LaTrobe University, majoring in music & the "physics of sound" In 1998 he studied violin making for 7 years in Melbourne, before attending masterclasses overseas including Cambridge UK. Specialising in restoration & repairs & the making of Double Basses, Benedict has also been responsible for the training of many Australian and overseas instrument makers

Tim Kill - Instrument Maker & Specialist Restorer/Bass & Slide Guitar Player

Joining the Atelier in 1999, Tim has brought his incredibly diverse & individual style of instrument making to the workshop. Specialising in high-end restoration & all aspects of making, Tim has created extremely professional & world-class stick basses. www.timkillcustom.com

Ilia Burkun - Fingerboard Master/Workshop

Originally from the Ukraine, Ilia's diverse background as artist, writer, journalist & sculptor has proven to be a valuable asset to this workshop. Specialising in the crafting & customising of the ebony fingerboards, his world-class skills adorn most of the instruments in the showroom

Mila Boado - Bookeeper/Administrator

With many years of experience in the music industry with roles from concert promoter/organiser to general management roles, Mila not only brings a professional side to business administration, she is often involved in the workshop as her french polishing skills are extremely admirable

Isaac Webb - Workshop/Repairs/Instrument Maker/Violin Player

Graduate of the Box Hill Furniture design school, Isaac has been involved in the making of many and diverse instruments from harps to guitars & even thumb pianos. As an enthusiastic amatuer musician he has brought an enthusiastic and dedicated attitude to very aspect of the workshop for more than 3 years

Ewen Baker - Workshop/Repairs/Violin,Guitar,Mandolin,Double Bass Player

Joining the Atelier in 2007, with a Bachelor of Music & Dip Ed, Ewen is an extremely proficient and versatile musician and teacher. Involved in all aspects of bow repairs and re-hairing, he is also proving to be an extremely talented repairer involved in all aspects of the trade. Outside of the workshop Ewen's current projects involve playing with Archie Roach, Shane Howard & many others

Mietta Sanciolo - Showroom Administrator/Singer/Guitar/Banjo/Clarinet/Keys/Percussion Player

Joining the Atelier mid 2009, Mietta comes from an event management background after studying a Diploma of Event Management as well as performing in multi instrumentalist band, The Good China. Mietta's responsible for the day-to-day administration & organising of this busy workshops's customer needs. Whether it's sourcing a new violin or accessories, booking repairs, or choosing a bass, Mietta is the first point of contact at the Atelier.
