About Me

“Suite Paulistana is full of Villa-Lobos’s sensations. I very much like the opening of the CD and its initial idea with the atmosphere of the Trenzinho Caipira ( Villa-Lobos compositon). The melodic expositions, ostinatos, main themes, variations and solos are very interesting. I wish you lots of music, lots of variations and many Suites today and always. Congratulations on your work!”
EGBERTO GISMONTI
“The most incredible fusion of jazz with Brazilian music”
EUMIR DEODATO
“It is impossible to describe what it was like to hear your CD; I was very proud Edu! One of the best things I have heard lately. You are an absolutely rare artist; it is great that Brazil has you!”
GUINGA
The bassist/composer/arranger Edu Martins is releasing two albums simultaneously: instrumental/orchestral and original songs. The first carries the name of his native city, “Suite Paulstana.” It contains instrumental music composed with time and love; it shows a balanced sophistication between the composition and the solos. Generally in instrumental projects more distinction is given for improvisations, but that is not the case here. The first piece has such an elaborate structure with so many “visits” to the modernism of Villa-Lobos, with polytonalities and polychords that it drew the attention of the great musician Egberto Gismonti: “full of the feeling of Villa-Lobos. I really like the CD’s opening and its initial theme with the atmosphere of Trenzino Caipira. The melodic expositions, ostinatos, main themes, variations and solos are very interesting.” Edu Martins is the kind of musician that demonstrates multiple musical interests in these works. From the “Ninth Symphony” of Dmitri Shostakovich to the convulsion of samba and maracatu.
The other CD carries the name “Saia Rodada” and is a collection of ballads, bossas and songs which risks taking a new direction in terms of Brazilian music. Here again, we have a balanced mixture between composition, arrangements and solos; all at a point which approaches the maximum of the limits of jazz. The compositions and poetry are all the works of Edu Martins; some with Miguel Garcia, a fantastic poet from São Paulo who settled in Minas. His way of playing is contemporary and adopts a technique of dislocation avoiding groove “systems;” making this “groove” appear from the collective sound, not only from one, but the other instrument. This is very similar to what Monk does in “Evidence” with the piano. He is not the type of composer that has one defined style. There is a notable contrast between consonance and dissonance forming a balance which is so akin to the polychords which he likes to use so much. Everything is pushed by a rhythm section where the “displacement” always creates a confined turbulence from where various themes explode.
