Biography:
Bobby Stanton likes to set a mood. This is blatantly obvious from the first time you set foot in his bedroom-turned-studio. Much like he does with his music, Bob uses the space around him to inspire himself and others."The Green Room," for example, is about his first bedroom in Ottawa. He shared a townhouse with a few other twenty-something guys and of course, the place was chaos. But upstairs, Bob's room was always chill. He's always liked to create an organic feel by putting colourful art on the walls (usually portraying his favourite musicians), leafy plants, soft lighting and plenty of seating for those who drop by to hang out and jam.Bob learned to play piano at five-years-old. He studied classical music through the Royal Conservatory until he was 14 when he got sick of practicing and the pressure to perfectly mimick someone else's composition. It wasn't until he turned 20 that he started focusing on playing music again. He brought a shitty old keyboard with him when he moved to Ottawa to go to college and in his spare time he started tinkering with drum loops and writing his own songs in a very imrovisational style.Bobby is very much a soloist. He loves to jam with other musicians for fun but has had a hard time coordinating his piano playing with others on a more serious level. He has had the most success by himself, writing songs late at night when he can't sleep. "It's a release of energy and keeps my mind clear," he says. "It's about creating something I'm happy about. Doesn't matter if my friends or family like it, it's for me and what I can make in the moment."If you lend an ear to Bobby's Recording Project (in the works since March 2008) you'll hear his influences shine through. He has by far been the most inspired by the organ stylings of Ray Manzarek, of the Doors (his favourite band). Bob is also inspired by pianists like Ben Kweller, Paul McCartney and the funky reggae breakdowns of Ottawa bands like Clock Strikes Music (who unfortunately called it quits in August 2008).If you watch Bob listen to music, whether he's at a live show or hearing a new album for the first time, you'll see his ears perk at the sound of the keys. In turn, his goal with Recording Project is to perk the ears of others. Bobby is loving the feedback he's been getting since putting his songs on MySpace so when you're checking out his tunes feel free to get in touch and let him know what you think.Miranda Grigor.
