About Me

Layout by CoolChaser Based out of Vancouver BC, Matthew Reid is a musician and composer with experience in a wide array of musical genres. Having grown up on Mayne Island in a musical family, Reid began gigging on bass at the age of twelve with local blues musicians. In high school he formed his first band, the funk-rock group, “Earthmen”, who became one of the largest drawing bands in the late 90s based out of Victoria, BC. In 2000, the group released their debut album, “Carbon” and performed extensively in support of it. In 2002, Reid relocated to Nagoya, Japan, where he composed and performed the score for the documentary, “The Sounds of Sunshine” (Coming Home Films). Moving back to Canada in 2005, Reid enrolled in the Vancouver Community College School of Music where he studied bass with Laurence Mollerup and composition with Giorgio Magnanensi. While earning his diploma in Jazz Performance, he co-founded “Ten Souljers”, Vancouver’s premier rhythm and blues band, and gained a reputation in the reggae community, joining 8 piece reggae group, “Macronix”, and performing with numerous artists from Canada, the US and Jamaica. In the spring of 2007, Matthew composed, performed and recorded the score to the internationally acclaimed children’s documentary, “Anita’s Africa” (Coming Home Films), winner of the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival award for Best Documentary, among others (SEE BLOG for DETAILS). Reid performs regularly as a member of “Ten Souljers” and “Macronix”, and is also very active as a freelance musician and composer.
