Welcome to the official MySpace page for Soul Legend Justine “Baby†Washington.
Born October 13, 1940 in Bamberg, South Carolina, Baby moved with her family north to New York City shortly afterwards. Entering the recording business in 1956 at the age of 16, she notched up an impressive body of work on labels such as J&S, Baton and Neptune. 1958’s fondly remembered “The Time†was recorded during this period.
However, it was her impressive run of singles for Henry “Juggy†Murray’s Sue label that confirmed Baby as a soul voice for the ages. From 1962 through 1967, Baby’s dusky contralto graced such certified “uptown†soul classics as “A Handful of Memories,†“Leave Me Alone†and “I Can’t Wait to See My Baby’s Face.†In addition, Baby is the voice behind the definitive versions of “It Will Never Be Over for Me†and 1963’s To 10 R&B gem (Top 40, Pop) “That’s How Heartaches Are Made.â€
Listening to these exquisite soul tracks, it’s easy to understand why Dusty Springfield cited Baby Washington as her “all-time favorite singer.â€
Upon leaving Sur in 1967, Baby recorded with Master 5, Sixth Avenue and Avi. This period saw her team with Don Gardner—a Soul Legend in his own right—for 1973’s “Baby Let Me Get Close to You†album.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Baby recorded and performed occasionally, opting instead to focus most of her energy on raising her family.
In recent years, interest from fans in the United States and abroad has seen Baby playing more shows. Her 2005 show in Belgium is fondly remembered by many.
Baby’s voice—always a rich instrument—just gets better. This official MySpace page is where you can find out where she is performing and even drop her a line. Enjoy!
Baby says: “Keep the Faith in 2009!â€
