He is credited as the creator of gonzo journalism, a style of reporting which blurs distinctions between author and subject, fiction and nonfiction. Thompson died at his house in Woody Creek, Colorado on February 20, 2005, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was 67 years old.
