A perfect driving song, “Pretty Holiday†is a sweet and irresistibly melodic song in which Byrka’s assured and virile vocals are neatly complemented by swirling keyboards and an evocative interplay of crisp acoustic and silvery electric guitars. The tune has a relaxed narrative flow, as it takes us on a journey from “the jungle haze of America†to the shores of Georgian Bay. The song’s vibe has a tinge of ‘70s folk-rock to it, while retaining a timeless freshness.
The song was spawned last winter, in Byrka’s Okanagan Valley home. “The weather was starting to get bad here, and it felt like it was time to go away,†Kenny recalls. “The intent was to have the relaxed feeling of that pretty holiday, with it sounding organic and earthy. It’s likely one of the simplest songs I’ve written but it seems to keep working on you. People that have heard it all say ‘it’s a fun tune and I want to crank it loud while I’m driving.’ That’s the reaction I want!â€
The recording of “Pretty Holiday†attracted some serious musical heavyweights. It was produced by Steven Drake (The Tragically Hip, 54-40), mixed by Richard Chycki (Aerosmith, Rush), features The Hip’s Johnny Fay on drums, and was mastered by Bob Ludwig, widely recognized as the best in the business. Other tracks on Kenny’s upcoming solo EP will feature the production talent of ace guitarist Danny McBride (Chris DeBurgh).
“Pretty Holiday†may be Byrka’s first single (and the title of his 5 song EP), but he’s no novice. He’s the frontman and co-songwriter of Sleddogs, a hard-working and seasoned rock band that has had a real impact on the Canadian rock landscape via their two albums, 2006’s Great Escape and 2007’s Take Me Away. Such singles as “Perfect Place †(a nominee for a 2006 Canadian Radio Music Award), “Take Me Away†and “Give Me A Sign†have been warmly embraced at HOT AC and Rock formats across the country, while the band has also had successful tours of the U.K. and New Zealand.
Sleddogs are definitely alive and kicking still. They’ll soon release their third studio album, once Byrka has completed what he calls “my little holiday from Sleddogs. I had 30 or 40 songs that just weren’t Sleddogs tracks, and felt like it was just time to put my own record together. It won’t be as deep, dark, and introspective as some of the band stuff.â€
The single definitely whets our appetite for more of a Pretty Holiday. Take it and enjoy!
