In January 2004 lead singer Andreas Olsson, by accident, added drummer Erik Eklund on MSN Messenger. A couple of confused messages later they had not only realized their mistake but also found common ground in their burning passion for music. Even though they were both involved in other bands they decided to meet up with some friends for a tryout rehearsal. Instantly they recognized good potential in each other and the decision to leave their other projects and form a band was not difficult. Though everything musically worked right away, during the first year the band ran into difficulties when problems with rehearsal studios, gear and money created friction between the members. The band broke up but thanks to Andreas and Erik’s determination, drive and realization that the material had too much potential to go to waste, they picked up the pieces and moved onward in search of a new guitarist and bass player... Not long after, Erik met Gabriel Rauhofer at a party discussing music. Gabriel had been deeply involved in a thrash metal band for years, but it didn’t take him long to appreciate what Andreas and Erik’s music was all about and after a couple of weeks he left his old band to join up as Self Deception’s lead guitarist. The mixture of different musical influences directly sculpted the sound that makes Self Deception what it is today. You can call it a stroke of luck but after the three of them started playing together the style of the music was instantly set and they could focus fully on creating great songs. After six month of rehearsing, by coincidence, Self Deception found their current bass player. Niklas Wester, who was rehearsing in the same building had just quit his band and with him the missing pieces fell into place, thus completing the lineup of musicians that is the Stockholm-based band Self Deception today. All of this because of one misspelled letter on MSN.
