my definition of dub
dub is for sure a very unique sound from the caribbean island. it stems from
little jamaican studios, which produced way back in the 1970ies and with
the help of lets say antique equipment, soundscapes, which had an enormous
impact on worldwide pop music. following this it became frequent to re-mix
successful tunes in a dub-version, changing its structure, adding effects
and new parts to highlight unique passages of the song. following their
maxime, it is almost natural, that t.s.a. are into dub and so you can find
live on stage and on all their records dub-songs and versions, as said
above.
my definition of history
without being categorized or crammed into a file under-folder the senior allstars
want to be understood in the tradition if musicians from way back the 1960ies,
which crossed the lines between their jamaican music and jazz. in the early
days of ska, rocksteady and reggae these were artists like the skatalites
and their outstanding musicians tommy mccook and jackie mittoo and nowadays
you might mention monty alexander or ernest ranglin. the senior allstars
is really into this music, but is of course gifted and skilled enough to
remember their own roots and come up with a 100% very own and authentic
sound.
my definition of style
you can also witness the bands creativity in their songwriting: they pick up
bob marleys jamming and make a heartfelt instrumental of it and they mingle
with jamaican riddims as e.g. swing easy to come up with something totally
new out of it. the other way round they know how to play classic jazz-standards
like e.g. john coltraines impressions, with a wonderful jamaican touch.
but at the very core of the senior allstars stand the compositions from
markus dassmann, which are on record and live on stage the great and very own definition of a jamaican jazz style.
