Leeds Reggae Concert

About Me

A concert that was developed in the aftermath of an incidence of violence at the Leeds (UK) West Indian Carnival in 1990. Founded by, among others the Late Mikey Waldo (of Radio Aire and seminal Pirate station MCR) with assistance from Derek 'Tubbs' Lawrence and Akeem. It was decided that the concert would take place on the Sunday before Carnival so as not to disrupt those proceedings. An entirely FREE concert, it has featured artists such as, Aswad, Third World, Lost Boyz, Gwen Guthrie, Macka B, Don-E, Ruby Turner, Buju Banton, Tony Rebel, Cutty Ranks, Chakademus and Pliers, Shaggy, Babycham, Suncycle, Wayne Wonder, Alison Hinds and many more; attracting audiences in excess of 80,000 revelers!!Also featured are local luminaries such as, Royal Blood, Stone Roots, Afro Physics, Jodie Ayesha,Stay Focus, Bianca G, K1, Yorkshire Terriers, T2 and more emerging local talent. Since 2006 we have been happy to share an association with BBC Radio 1xtra. A big shout to those who have passed away who have been invaluable to the concert over the years: Norma Hutchison, Anthony 'Mr.Ling' Campbell, Terry 'Fabulous' Brown and Mikey 'Dread' Waldo.
