Kobayashi continued to dominate the sport of competitice eating, once again obiliterating the competition in Coney Island by eating 49 hot dogs in 12 minutes. This was his fifth consecutive win at the big dance. However, newcomer Joey Chestnut recently challenged Kobayashi, leading him during the first seven minutes of the eight-minute Krystal hamburger contest. Kobayashi overcame the deficit in the final minute to defeat Chestnut, 67 Krystals to 62, and once again relish victory.
