What's the surest way to tell an independent film from a big-studio production? Hollywood won't show a dog being killed, but gritty indie helmers don't hesitate. (Don't worry -- it's only a movie.) In "Red," bad-seed teens torment a benign old man (Brian Cox) and shoot his beloved 14-year-old pooch, bringing serious bad karma. Rather than leveraging its central tragedy to support a mindless exercise in style, "Red" serves as a throwback to the no-gloss psychological tack of "Walking Tall" and other '70s exploitation classics. Still, most auds won't pay to see such cruelty, animal or otherwise, severely limiting this thriller's reach.

Red (2007), directed by Trygve Allister Diesen and Lucky McKee. The story (by author Jack Ketchum) features Brian Cox as Avery, an older gentleman who is terrorized by three local teenagers while fishing in a nearby lake. One of these thugs has a shotgun and he kills Avery’s 14-year-old dog, leaving the horrified old man alone to deal with his misfortune. To its credit, the story defies all expectations at this point. Avery does not immediately go on a Charles Bronson-like rampage but, rather, quietly goes about his business trying to find some form of justice. He talks with the police. He talks with the kids parents (Tom Sizemore plays the role of the father to the dog killer, and leaves no doubt as to why the kid is such a bad apple). Avery even talks to a reporter for a television news show, this despite having no TV of his own. But all these efforts only lead to more misfortune for Avery as the confrontations between him and the dog killers escalate – with tragic results.
