About Me

I edited my profile with Thomas Myspace Editor V4.4 (www.strikefile.com/myspace)I'm an experimentalist composer and improviser living and working in Berkeley, California. I work in a variety of genres. I compose New Music (contemporary Classical) for solo instruments and ensembles, and I improvise and compose on prepared Rhodes electric pianos, acoustic piano, and other instruments.I've redesigned one of my Rhodes electric pianos to better suit my needs as an improviser and composer. I also compose electroacoustic music, and sometimes songs as well as music for film.I received an M.F.A. from Mills College in Oakland, CA, in Electronic Music and Recording Media in 2001. My first solo prepared Rhodes release, "Ten to the Googolplex," was published on Accretions recordings in that year.At Mills I was privileged to study with Fred Frith, Pauline Oliveros, Maggi Payne, Eliane Radigue, Alvin Curran, Chris Brown, J. D. Parran, Douglas Ewart, Steed Cowart, and John Bischoff. In 2002, I produced and played on a improvised quartet recording called "DalabaFrithGlickRiemanKihlstedt" with Lesli Dalaba (trumpet), Fred Frith (guitar), and Carla Kihlstedt (violin). It was released in 2003 on Accretions recordings. In 2004 I produced and performed on a trio recording called "Lung Tree," which was released on Chris Cutler's ReR recordings in 2005. The trio was Lesli Dalaba (trumpet), Stuart Dempster (trombone), and myself on prepared Rhodes, piano, and modular synthesizer. In early May 2008 the Mills College Contemporary Performance Ensemble performed my piece, "Ghost House, N.M. (Anachronistic Acronym) in their Spring concert. I've been a member of this ensemble since 1999, and this is the third time they've performed one of my pieces.Since 2004, I've been a member of www. Thingamajigs. org, an organization dedicated to the promotion of instrument builders and/or composers who use alternate tunings in their work.In 2005 and 2006 I co-curated the 8th and 9th annual Music for People and Thingamajigs Festival in Oakland, CA.. Check out our website at www. Thingamajigs. org. From 1999 to 2003, I was also a member of a San Francisco based indie rock band called laughingstock, with Alex Nahas (Chapman stick and vocals), Zoe Keating (cello), Milton Cross (violin), and Mark Bernfield (drums.) I played Hammond organ, Theremin, and Waterphone. From 1994 to 2005 or so, I was a member of the improvising band Bilge with David Mairs and Robin Hiroko Walsh. I was also a member of the large ensemble Bilge/Radiolaria for a number of years. There's more, but it gets even more lengthy (!), so these are today's highlights.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: me. Except when Other People play my composed music, or I'm improvising with Other People. Which happens a fair amount. For example, Lung Tree, playing the Timbral Shift X located on yon local music player. Also on said music player, I have an excerpt of the Mills College Contemporary Performance Ensemble 's May 1st, '08 rendition of a recent piece...Here is an excerpt of "Snail Score 3", performed live and solo at Unnameable Books in Brooklyn on 7/13/08 (cinematography and editng by Daniel Califf-Glick.) The graphic score for this piece is a collaboration with snails. Here is a recent performance at The RESBOX series in LA, CA. This was put together by VJ Fader, who collaborated with me, and features his interesting video manipulation technology.

Examine for your amazement this filmed improvisation performed live on WDBX, Carbondale, Illinois(8/9/08, w/ Dan Godston.) Cinematography/editing by Dave X (the DJ) and friends. At about 1:30 into the video, a pair of Eastern Bluebirds flies into the studio where we were playing, and joins the improvisation. Odd, since much of my interest lately has been to explore interspecies collaboration... The audio from this emphasizes the acoustic sounds of my instrument, as the electro-acoustic sound was being broadcast into the ether.
Influences: The sound of children sleeping. The constant hum of highways nearby and distant. Refrigerators, mice, sycamore leaves, cactus. The sound design of my backyard. The movie, "Into Great Silence." Tarkovsky. Whatever my 5 year old son puts into my piano to surprise me. Financial difficulties. Summer heat. Difference tones. Humidity. Coffee. Love, Memory, and Tinnitus.
Sounds Like: Many sounds. Sometimes, not as many.
