I'd like to meet:

.. It's important to note that these terms are for reference points only. These cuts were traditionally performed by barbers and have since been adopted by hairdressers who may work on both male and female clients. Some hairdressers might not be as familiar with the terms and have their own descriptions that they use.Keep in mind that hairstylists and barbers often have their own mental picture of what different cuts and styles look like. They may also have their own slang and terminology. Even within the same salon a cut may be referred to differently. The very best way to guarantee that you get the style you want is to take photos or other similar images. If you tell your barber or stylist that you want a brush cut, they might give you a much shorter cut than you might want.Take photos that show the cut you desire from all angles, when possible. If you have a photo of a celebrity with the style, that works even better in some cases because the barber or stylist might be familiar with the celebrity. Men's Haircut TermsAlthough historically these cuts are mostly worn by men, some women have adopted some of the styles, such as buzz cuts. In the infamous movie, G.I. Jane, Demi Moore reached for clippers and gave herself what is known as a "burr cut" or an "induction cut".(Image of Bruce Willis with bald style - DailyCeleb.com - all rights reserved). This is the same cut given to recruits in the US armed services for years. Technically Demi's cut could also be considered a buzz cut.360 Waves - Popular today with young African American men. The style is named for the natural pattern of tight waves and ridges that form a 360 pattern through the use of special pomades, brushing and sleeping in du rags. The style is specific to African American hair textures that tend to be tightly coiled or kinky.(Image to side of Nelly enhanced to show exceptionally developed wave ridges and patterns. Nelly is considered an icon for 360 "spinnin" waves. Image from DailyCeleb.com - all rights reserved).Continued below ? advertisementAfro - The Afro appeared in the 1970s as a specific African American hair fashion statement proudly adopted by both male and females. The full and natural African American hairstyle was proudly worn by Michael Jackson, Jesse Jackson and other popular entertainment folks. The style was created with the use of a hair pick designed to maximize the natural kinkiness of black hair. The Afro is remembered as a symbol of black power. This style gained a level of fame when worn prominently by rights activists Angela Davis, it was also popular in the black entertainment fields. Ironically, Samantha on Sex And The City wore an Afro wig in the last season of the popular show to cover hair loss from breast cancer. The Afro, which used to be worn primarily by African Americans has been adopted by all races and ages.Bald - Complete absence of hair which may be due to deliberate shaving of head or due to genetic hair loss. Bruce Willis (see image above) has adopted the bald is beautiful motto for his unique style. Although Bruce has been experiencing accelerated hair loss for several years, he still shaves his head for a uniform look.Bangs - Hair is scissored to specifically hang down over the forehead. Bangs are called fringes in England and some other countries. Bangs can take several forms from thick and full to wispy and texturized.Bantu Knots/Braids - A combination of twisted plaits and knots. Bantu knots are created by dividing hair into individual plaits, then twisting each plait into knots along the top of the head. Sometimes worn by African American male celebrities.Bowl Cut - A cut that gets its name from the origins of placing a bowl on top of the head and then cutting off everything that protrudes from under the bowl. This gives hair of up to several inches in length on top with and close cropped hair below the bowl line and no blend (or transition) between the two lengths.(Image of Tom Petty with modified bowl cut with bangs - 12-06-05 DailyCeleb.com - all rights reserved - 2005).The bowl cut became popular during the Great Depression as an easy way of cutting boy's hair when money was unavailable for a visit to the barbershop. While techniques may have improved over the years, the cut still has the same basic characteristics of longer hair on top and shorter hair below a "bowl line", which is usually just above the ears.Similar cuts to the basic bowl include the under cut and the dipped mushroom cut. Moe Howard of the Three Stooges was famous for his classic bowl. The bowl is less popular then it used to be. When it is worn (see Tom Petty above who has a style that is bowl inspired although with longer strands in the back) it tends to be softened and modified to eliminate the severe bowl lines that is part of the style's trademark.Braids - Hair is woven together into a variety of styles that can range from tight braids worn close to the scalp with an intricate pattern of parts or braids worn in a single or multiple formation.(Image of Xzibit - DailyCeleb.com - all rights reserved).Willie Nelson is famous for his long braided styles. Sometimes Willie wear one single three strand braid that cascades down the back of his head. Other times he will wear two braids on either side of his head.Brush Cut - Hair is cut so that it stands up literally like brush bristles. This is basically a longer variation of the traditional crew cut.Burr Cut - Also known as the induction or jarhead cut.Burr With Bumper - Saw as the horseshoe flattop.Business man's cut or Professional Cut - a term that describes a short (but not extremely short) haircut.(Image of Hugh Laurie "Dr. House" from 2006 - courtesy of Dailyceleb.com - all rights reserved). It would generally refer to a cut that is long enough to be either parted or brushed back from the forehead. The back and sides may be tapered or slightly longer, but cut around the ears. A good example of this cut worn on the shorter side is actor Hugh Laurie from the popular TV show House.Butch - a short cut in which the hair is cut an even, short length (usually around 1/4 inch or less) all over. Outside the U.S., this cut is generally known as a crew cut. Within the U.S., a butch is defined as shorter than a crew cut.The butch is distinguished from a classic American crew cut by its even length all over the head. An true American style crew cut has a little extra length at the front of the head).Buzz or Buzz cut - a short cut (like the butch cut described above). The name comes from the sound of the electric clippers used for the cut.(Image of Michael Weatherly with buzz cut - DailyCeleb.com - all rights reserved)A buzz cut may typically range from 1/4 of an inch down to complete stubble that is cut without a guard on the clippers.Caesar Cut - a moderately short cut worn in the style of Julius Caesar. The hair is layered to around 1 to 2 inches all over. The hair is brushed forward to a short bang or fringe at the front.A longer version of the Caeser is known as the French Crop which features longer bangs. Some men will adopt a Caeser or French Crop when they are in the first stages of hair loss but do not wish to go with a shaved or buzz cut.(Image of Jeremy Piven wearing a form of a French Crop/Caeser - Global Vision For Peace - 03-20-03 - all rights reserved - DailyCeleb.com)College Cut - Haircut that is similar to an Ivy League cut. The back is clipper cut short all the way past the crown with the length increasing until the front fringe or bangs start anywhere from one to three inches in the front of the head. Bangs may be worn straight down, parted in the middle or brushed to the side.Crewcut - In general the U.S. definition of a crew cut loosely refers to a hair cut that is tapered at the back and sides but may be up to one inch on top. Crew cuts in the United States can also generally mean short male cuts. The European and non-US versions of crew cuts are different. The non-US versions refer to a cut that is short all over (about 1/4 inch) and may be tapered a little at the back and the sides.Cornrows - Cornrows are a type of braid that have been in existence for hundreds of years. They became wildly popular in modern times when Bo Derek wore cornrows in the popular movie "10" co-starring Dudley Moore. Cornrows are created when a row of hair is sectioned off and braided, usually straight or at an angle.Depending on the length and thickness of hair, it can take anywhere from a few to many hours to create cornrows on the entire head.Cupcake Cut - A traditional bowl cut that is cut very high towards the crown so that from the side view, the cut looks like the top of a cupcake.Dipped Mushroom Cut or Dipped Bowl Cut - this is like a regular bowl cut, however, the back follows the curvature around the ears and "dips" at least one to two inches lower at the back or the head. This prevents the bowl cut from having a look much like the side view of a "cupcake" when the bowl is cut too high.Dreadlocks - This style is also known as having dreads or dreds. The basic style consists of matted and knotted strands. Dreadlocks can be a controversial hairstyle due to the fact that they are associated with Rastafarian and African culture.(Image of Adam Duritz wearing his trademark dreadlocks - DailyCeleb.com - all rights reserved).A popular style at one point with musicians and rock stars. Dreadlocks can evolve naturally by letting hair knot and dread or it can be created through a series of knotting or dreading techniques.Fade or Temple Fade - a short tapered cut. The hair at the back and sides is tapered from zero length lower down up to around half an inch. The hair may be short or longer over the crown of the head. On top, the hair is longer (up to 2 to 3 inches) and may be layered.Flattop - a range of styles in which the hair is cut so that the top of the hair is cut into a flat surface. This style can have a range of lengths. Depending upon the length of the cut and the hair type, gel or pomade will be required to hold the hair in place. The longer the hair on top, the greater the effort required to style it. The cut gives a flat top surface on the round shape of the head. This means that the hair at the front central area of the head is cut shorter than the hair at the front and around the top sides of the head. Because of this, a short flattop will allow the scalp at the front central area of the head to be visible. This is known as a landing strip. If the hair is left longer on top, the front and upper sides will require more styling (such as blow-drying and either gel or pomade) to hold it place. The sides of a flattop are generally cut very short (although some variations of the cut can have the hair at the sides much longer than on top and slicked down). Another variation of the flat top is to have the back and sides shaved completed clean (with lather and a razor). This variation is known as white walls.French crop - Very similar to a Caesar style, but worn a little longer and/or feathered near the front. Refer to the Caesar definition above.Fringe - A British or European term for bangs.Faux Hawk - A haircut that is a mock version of a full Mohawk (see Mohawk definition below). Referred to as "chicken hawks" by traditional Mohawk wearers. U.S. soccer player Clint Mathis was famous for his spiked blonde faux hawk which he wore in 2002 during competitions.A faux hawk, unlike a full blown Mohawk, has a center strip of hair that snakes down the center of their head and is sculpted into a stiff center spike with pomades, gels or waxes. In the faux hawk the either side of the head is cut close with about 1/4 to 1/2 inches of hair remaining. The sides extend up to the top of the head and merge into the center strip of hair that may extend up off the head by 2 to 4 inches. Depending on the natural texture of the hair, the center strip will be worn lightly spiked or densely curled.Another version of the Faux Hawk was the messy hawk where the center hair was worn softer and tousled and less spiky. Nick Lachey was known for his version of a messy hawk which was also referred to as messy spikes.High and Tight - A standard cut in the United States Marine Corps, a high and tight comprises cut to a stubble at the back and sides using clippers with no guard comb attached and short - around 1/4 inch all over on top.(Image of Jake Gyllenhall - 2-27-05 - Vanity Fair Oscar Party -DailyCeleb.com)Alternatively, the top may be cut into a short flattop. The back and sides may also be clean shaved using lather and a razor. This style was worn by Jake Gyllenhall in the movie Jarhead where he played a Marine. Jake's hair was cut to represent an authentic high and tight style.Oster clippers are often used by barbers in the military. They are different from other clippers because they are powered by a motor instead of an electric vibrating device. This allows them to stay cooler during heavy clipping usage.High and Tight Recon - a shorter version of the regular high and tight. The hair is cut higher on the side, tapered very closely on top with a runway in the middle going all the way to the back like a horseshoe. It resembles a Mohawk. Recon-Marines are famous for this haircut.Horseshoe Flattop - an extremely short version of the flattop cut. This cut gets its name because the only hair left on the head is a "horseshoe" shape ring of hair around the upper sides and across the front. The "landing strip" area is bigger than in regular flattops and the unguarded clippers are taken over the crown of the head. One contributor to this website provided some more information about this cut, also calling it a "TH flattop". This is described as a flattop cut with a TH clipper. The TH clipper is a type of clipper that will cut hair even closer than the 000 Wahl or 0 Oster clipper and is almost as short as an electric shaver. The horseshoe flattop is also sometimes known as a "burr with bumper". The cut is basically 1/4" (no more than 3/8") butch waxed in front and an 1/8" along the sides of the "flat" - it's as short as you'll get before going to the full burr or induction cut. It was popular among career Marines in the 1960's. Unlike most other flattops, this cut can work well with fine or thinning hair (or at least some types hair thinning patterns). (Thanks to Gunny for contributing this information.)Induction Cut (or burr cut) - the cut given to male recruits when they enter the United States armed services. Generally, the cut is made with electric clippers with no guard comb attached. This just leaves an even length stubble across the head. The armed services of other countries vary in their haircuts regulations for both new recruits and trained soldiers.Ivy League - This haircut is basically short and tapered at the back and sides and cut close - about 1/4 to 1/2 inch across the crown of the head, but graduated to longer lengths of up to 1 1/2 to 2 inches extending from the hairline at the front of the head.(Image of Tom Arnold with a version of the Ivy League cut - DailyCeleb.com - all rights reserved). This is very similar to the traditional crew cut, but cut longer at fuller the front of the head. The hair at the front is usually brushed up using styling products that will provide hold, such as hair gel or pomade. It can also be worn down or parted on either side or in the middle. This haircut provides more flexibility that with a crew cut. It can be styled more than one way but still provides a crisper "buzzed" appearance along the sides and at the back. The Ivy League style can be modified in a number of ways such as leaving the sides a little longer or even buzzing them a lot tighter. The top can also be slightly textured or layered to give a different look that includes popular tousled or messy styling.Landing Strip - the patch of scalp that can been seen in the flat area of a very short flattop haircut.Layered Cut - Style of having hair cut so that hair on different parts of the head is approximately the same length (instead of being cut longer in the centre and shorter around the edges). This cut contrasts from tapered cuts and bowl cuts.Low And Tight - Similar to the high and tight haircut, except instead of having the sides and back completely clipped to the skin, the hair is only partially buzzed to about half way up the head. The higher side and back hair is clipped fairly short, but not to the skin. The hair on top of the head may be cut as a flattop or clipped short.Mohawk - A traditional Mohawk also known as a Roosters Comb or Cocks Comb and features a completely shaved head with just one center strip of hair that extends from the front of the head down to the nape of the neck. The head was either shaved with razor blades or a clipper with no guard comb.A Mohawk is worn in an arched shape and is spiked several inches off the scalp. The center strip of hair is generally between 2 and 4 inches in width. The hair would extend up from the crown by anywhere from 6 to 12 inches or more. The determining factors in the height would be whether the hair could be stiffened enough to stand up straight. In the early days Mohawks were sculpted with egg whites and Aqua Net to guarantee extremely strong holding power. In 2001 and 2002 the modified Mohawk known as the Faux Hawk evolved as a fashion hair statement and became popular with sports stars and celebrities. Almost mostly worn by male, some women wore softer diffused versions of the Faux Hawk.Mullet - Two haircuts put together to form one hairstyle. Although popular with men at one point, women also have been known to wear mullets which are termed Gullets. Ellen Degeneres wore a Gullet at the beginning of her stand up career. The traditional mullet combines a very short front and side cut with or without bangs with a long back section that will hang down to the shoulders or longer. From different angles the style looks like different cuts. From the back the Mullet looks long but from the front it looks short. The Mullet was trendy during the 1970s and 1980s. It made a brief return in the 1990s on the fashion runways of all places. David Bowie was the poster boy for mullets in the early 70s when he wore it for his role as Ziggy Stardust. The Mullet is sometimes controversial with some people using it in a derogatory tone to define hair of questionable fashion.Pageboy - Style of having hair cut so that hair is all one length from top to bottom and then curled under around the bottom. Pageboys can be worn with center or side parts and are often worn down to the shoulders or a little longer.(Image of Ozzy Osbourne in long version of center parted pageboy style where the ends are turned under - image from DailyCeleb.com - all rights reserved).Pompadour (or quiff) - the style of wearing the hair brushed back off the forehead. Typically a pompadour is not parted, but just brushed straight up and back. The term pompadour is also a woman's hairstyle again with the hair brushed back high from the forehead, into a roll (much higher than for a man's pompadour). The term is named after a woman (Marquise de Pompadour, a mistress of France's Louis XV). The pompadour is referred to (as a man's hairstyle) in John Steinbeck's classic 1952 novel "East of Eden":Porky Cut - Same as the Induction Cut which may also be referred to as a Jarhead Cut.Princeton/Harvard Cut - this is basically another name for an Ivy League cut (Princeton University & Harvard being two of the official eight Ivy League universities in the United States).Pudding Basin Haircut - another term for a bowl cut that is derived from the history of the cut. This term is not a widely used term these days. Haircut performed by placing a pudding basin over the head and cutting off all the hair below the rim of the basin all the way around the head. Commonly used for hundreds of years by poor and rural families. Other names for this haircut are bowl cut, bowl crop, basin cut and basin crop. The roundheads of English 17th Century history got their name from this haircut. The apprentices rioting in London wore their hair 'cut around the head' using a bowl as a guide; hence the name roundhead. Two German names for this haircut are Topfschnitt and Pottschnitt.Regulation Haircut - a very short tapered haircut. The back and sides are cut very short and clipped to the scalp lower down at the back and sides, tapered very short to the crown, with the top cut just long enough to comb over. This is a broad term and you may wish to provide more details of what you want to your barber. In some shops, you might expect to have the hair clipped to the scalp up to about an inch and a half or more above the hair line. In other shops, less of the head may be clipped to the skin.Razor Cut - a technique of cutting hair using the blade of a razor instead of scissors.Shaved - the hair is cut completely to the skin using a traditional razor blade or an electric razor. This should not be confused with hair that is cut using clippers. A crew cut or a buzz cut is not shaved. Many people tell their hairdressers or barbers that they want part or all of their head shaved, when they actually want a tapered cut or some other clipper cut. This is why it is important to bring photos whenever possible to make sure that you and the hairdresser or barber are on the same page.Short Back And Sides - a widely-used term used in Australia and New Zealand (especially before the 1970s) to describe a short tapered cut. Before the 1970's the most common haircut given in New Zealand was the "short back and sides" which is 1/8th inch on the back and sides (tapered 'round the edge) and reasonably short on top regardless of whether it is brushed back, flat top, side part, center part, or whatever.A male (regardless of age) would religiously get his hair cut every 2 - 3 weeks without fail and accordingly all that was needed on the top was a trim. A New Zealand written song uses as part of it's lyrics referring to the New Zealand male's haircut "a bit off the top and short back and sides".Spikes - The hair is worn in a series of spikes that can be short or long. Spikes are different than a Mohawk with extends down the center of the head.Square Back - the hair at the back is cut at the bottom as a defined straight line. The hair is left full and is not tapered at the back or the sides. A square back can be used with a range of styles, including a crew cut, an ivy league or college cut or a flattop.Taper - the style of having the hair cut getting progressively shorter lower down towards the nape of the head. This is generally done with electric clippers and gives a crisper, freshly cut look. The degree of tapering can range from a slight taper to a style in which the hair around the nape and around the ears is completely shaven.Teddy Boy Cut - a style worn by mods in England during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Typically the hair was cut relatively long (for the time), brushed back, and heavily greased. To read more about mods, teddy boys, including hairstyle information, read the article "Mod. The Life and How to Live It", which is part of an English website.Temple Fade - see fade above.TH Flattop and TH Clipper - see horseshoe flattop above.Thinning Shears - scissors that are used to thin hair out. Instead of having two flat blades, like regular scissors, thinning shears have matching sets of "teeth" with gaps between them. When used to cut hair, some of the hair gets between the teeth of the shears and is cut, but most of the hair falls in the gaps between the teeth and is not cut. This allows some of the hairs to be cut short and other hairs to remain at the full length of the style. With some of the hairs cut short, this thins out the hair.Under Cut - this cut is much like a bowl cut except the ridge of the bowl is not where the cuttings ends. The ridge of the bowl is lifted so the hair is clipper cut further up the side of the head an additional one to two inches. This allows the head to be shaken and the bowl look will always return to its regular shape. The sides may either be "white-walled" or cut to 1/8" length. The bottom of the back may be either faded or square cut.An under cut differs from the bowl cut by the fact that the hair in clipped one or two inches underneath the bowl. The reason that someone might select an undercut vs a bowl is that the undercut retains its shape better when the head is moved.Wedge Cut - similar to a bowl cut, except that the hair below the weight line is tapered instead of all being cut to the one length. The taper may be quite gradual and may not be very short or clean cut. In fact, the hair may even cover the top of the ears. This is not specifically a cut done by a barber and may be worn by men or women.Dorothy Hamill made the Wedge famous. This style was actually invented in a barber shop but adopted by Vidal Sassoon and his gang. Over the years the Dorothy Hamill wedge has been lost and more modern, less defined styles have taken the place of the original Hamill Wedge.Whiffle Cut - Another name for the induction cut.White Walls - a flattop haircut in which the back and sides of the head are shaved clean using lather and a razor (see the flattop definition above). SummaryIf the latest Hollywood and New York movie premiere scene is any indication of new male hair tends, longer strands, sideburns, beards and mustaches appear to be making a big comeback
