About The Willow Foundation
For those living with a life-threatening illness, every day deserves to be treated as precious.
Sadly the stress and difficult realities of diagnosis and treatment mean that it's all too easy to forget that life is here to be lived.
The Willow Foundation is a unique charity that organises and funds very special, morale-boosting and memorable days for seriously ill young adults aged 16-40. The Foundation provides more than 100 special days every month for individuals and their loved ones. In 2007 the charity provided1,054 special days.
The letters of thanks and photographs received at the Foundation are testament to the uplifting, often empowering effect that special days have on not only the individuals but also their families.
There is no other national UK charity that provides special day experiences for the 16-40 age group, across all life-threatening conditions. These include cancer, motor neurone disease, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and many more. All applications must meet the charity's medical criteria and be endorsed by a medical professional involved in the individual's care.
The Foundation strives to create a unique and unforgettable day that is tailored to the needs of every recipient. He or she chooses exactly what they would like to do on their special day and the Foundation aims to meet and, wherever possible, exceed their expectations, making the day truly special. Some of the most popular requests include: trips to West End shows and concerts, tickets to sporting events, family breaks and weekends in the country, days at health spas with treatments, driving performance cars and trips in hot air balloons and helicopters.
The Willow Foundation was founded in 1999 by Bob and Megs Wilson as a lasting memorial to their daughter, Anna Carey, who died of cancer, aged 31. Bob Wilson is the former Arsenal and Scotland goalkeeper and TV presenter.
Anna battled cancer for five years, yet it was during these years that she, her family and friends, experienced some of their most memorable moments and quality times together. Treats, days out, concert trips and just being with friends simple distractions from her illness gave Anna the determination and adrenaline to fight on. She wanted quality of life, quality of time, and most importantly, when she became ill, she wanted to be treated as normal.
It is these positive experiences that the Willow Foundation aims to replicate through the provision of special days for other seriously ill young adults throughout the UK.
