Ugly Tree

About Me

In the summer of 1994 after 3 friends and long time musical acquaintances decided to finally join forces that would eventually become Ugly Tree. Todd York (Bass) and John McAlpin (Guitar) had previously played together in several local bands together including The Exploding Tomcats and Real Big Deal. Bub Corder (Drums) had been a local drumming staple since the early1980's by playing in well known groups such as Rapid Transit and XPD (ironically with Todd's older brother Jeff).Ugly Tree began writing and recording demo tapes of their original music as early as 1995. Radio airplay and constant live performances locally in Monticello (as well as other cities such as Somerset, Lexington, Richmond & Bowling Green) lifted the popularity of the group thru the end of 1997. Much of 1998 was spent recording and mixing their debut CD "Ugly Tree" released early in 1999. Ugly Tree would ultimately go on to front such national acts as Neils Lofgren (Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band), Supafuzz, BlackFoot & The Classic Rock All Stars (Comprised of members from such popular acts as Sugarloaf, Rare Earth & Iron Butterfly). The group quickly developed an identity based on the their stripped down, raw 3 piece sound generated by les pauls and refrigerator sized amps. Before the group toured in support of the first CD, the band decided to add another guitar player to further strengthen the impact of their live show. Longtime friend and fellow musician Jerry Hutchinson was the obvious choice, thus completing the final lineup. Ugly Tree played a variety of shows thru 2000 while continuing to enjoy both regional airplay and extensive media coverage. Extending on this newly acquired popularity, the group immediately rushed into the studio in early 2001 to record the (still unreleased) follow up to the debut slab. The group had grown both musically and the new work showcased their much refined songwriting skills acquired over the past few years. Unfortunately, the band started to move away geographically (McAlpin moving from Lexington to Cincinnati and York then relocating to Louisville - while Corder and Hutchinson remained in Monticello). This distance between the members would send Ugly Tree into an extended hiatus that would not be broken until a one off reunion show in July 2004.In May 2007, the band decided they would once again rekindle the fire that carries into the present time. With the original line up intact, 2009 plans to be a busy year for the band. With the release of the 2nd CD finally in the works, as well as a handful of shows planned for the fall season, this rock and roll machine is once again rolling.
