THE SLOWEST RIDE
"The Heart is Home" is the title of their eponymous debut. The score to make out with during that road trip you and your college buddies took (or meant to take but couldn't due to a haze of nor-cal hippy dank) amidst playing Lee Hazlewood and Crazy Horse tapes while switching off in the driver's seat. "Can't Decide" reminds us what it would sound like if J Mascis went acoustic during the recordings of "Green Mind (1991 Blanco y Negro)," ringin' in the Neil Young swagger of Live Rust style rock n' roll. I would take it a step further to argue that this is to be considered the opus of a genre of music built on top of "Out of the Blue and into the Black." Johnny Aulenta shows the listener a realm of musical possibility that exists beyond the confines of revivalist rock as methode de musica. "Only Friend" paints a love letter of loneliness of love that it sends your heart thumping to a 606 four quarter beat to droning guitars that Jason Pierce would enjoy. Johnny Cash's martyrdom of music left us with the talents of Johnny and Jimmy to take us where we want to go. Hallelujah.~Simon Sydney KAZU 90.3 FM "Simon Says"
