Darragh Murphy

About Me

Darragh is a multi-instrumentalist. He plays low-whistles, guitar and banjo to name a few but his main instrument is the uilleann pipes which he has played since an early age and has developed a style of playing that is completely unique. After winning 3 All-Ireland titles on the pipes by the age of 18 and touring USA and Europe extensively, he was invited to play on compilation albums showcasing the best pipers in Ireland and the world and worked with reknowned producer PJ Curtis. After this, Darragh appeared on the same bill as legends such as Robert Plant, Lou Reed and the Chieftains at festivals in Europe and also featured on an album for BMG with Cathal Hayden, Jim McGrath and James Blennerhasset among others. In 2005 Darragh briefly joined Curtha, in which featured some of the most talented musicians in Ireland, Eamon Riordan, Laura Kerr, Colm Regan, John McGreevy and Brian Mooney. Darragh has also toured with Riverdance and played in great venues such as the NIA arena in Birmingham, The SECC in Glasgow and more. After a series of gigs with Joanne Cash, sister of the legend Johnny, Darragh is now turning his attention to a new project with fiddler Shane McAleer, previously of Dervish, called Pigeon Top and they are currently recording a debut album.

Sounds Like: "Darragh Murphy moves the audience by performing the stirring "Caoineadh Chu Chulainn" (Lament) beautifully." -Glenmeads Riverdance review http://www.glennmeads.co.uk/archive/riverdan.htm"Stand out performances come from the flighty Ottowan fiddler, Alexis Macisaac and a winding and ranging piper, Darragh Murphy. Each provides chilling solos and vibrancy when needed. Such is the potency produced at times, it gets the audience’s toes tapping rhythmically, let alone the performers." -EntertainmentManchester, Riverdance review http://www.entertainmentmanchester.com/theatre/reviews/opera -house-riverdance.htm"Music was provided by the ever-smiling Alexis MacIsaac on fiddle, the laid back Darragh Murphy on Uilleann pipes (the only member of the company who looked he’d just walked out of an Irish bar)" - BBC Bristol, Riverdance review -http://www.bbc.co.uk/bristol/content/articles/2007/06/21/ri verdance_rev_feature.shtml
