"National Martyr Day"
Tora Le Boxing
Fearless and radical emotionality pervades the music and performance of Tora Brava. As a solo artist, the South Korean-born singer brings a unique presence and charisma backed by solid songwriting chops that have caught the attention of critics and fans alike in Europe, Asia, and North America. Born Haena Kim, a self-proclaimed "Jersey girl", Tora's family emigrated to the New Jersey suburbs after political strife led them to leave Seoul when she was 3 years old. Classical piano, viola, choir and ballet lessons soon followed. After attending university in New York City, she performed and released 3 cds with her post-modern rock project Xtatika, including the genre-busting percussion-romp Tongue Bath, released on John Zorn's label Tzadik. A foray into electronic music brought her to collaborate with producer Denim Venom and the duo toured Europe, opening for artists such as Sean Lennon and Lesbians on Ecstacy. Soon thereafter, Tora went solo. Her upcoming EP, Escape From Wonderland, represents a larger body of work that was written and recorded during recent stints in Paris, France, and Morocco. Electro-dance beats, bitten by an industrial pulse, merge with live percussion that make for a catchy brew of pop hooks and synths reminiscent of the 90s. On the world stage, Tora Brava brings something new but recognizable in a package that defies expectation every time, speaking across cultures and boundaries to the future of music itself.
