SHIVA is an Albuquerque, New Mexico band that is now in its 5th and greatest incarnation. Originally conceived by Chris (guitarist & vocalist) in 2001, its other members have come and gone in a way that has added to the quality and texture of Shiva's material. In 2004 he reconnected with Ian (bassist & vocalist from versions 4 and 4b), and they soon filled the drummer position with Joe (who also drums in Chris' other band, Melizmatix). With new material and new directions to explore, they are gigging and promoting wherever possible. Shows are being scheduled for them at all the good venues in town, while a holiday recording session yielded a new EP that was made available as of their CD release party on Friday, March 11 at The Golden West Saloon. More recording may be expected this summer.
After the heavy-creation-mantra-art-rock-etc. tradition of bands such as Kyuss and Pink Floyd, with neatly interspersed progressive angles bringing to mind outfits like TooL and Rush, Shiva's music has a deep, psychotropic quality that ranges naturally between spacious antigravity and the earth-shattering intensity of an imploding nuclear furnace.
