Yeshe Tsogyal

About Me

Yeshe Tsogyal, Ocean of Wisdom Awareness, is the outer aspect of the Dakini Heart Essence mandala. She is at once a female buddha, a wisdom dakini, and a renowned master in the tantric Tibetan tradition of Vajrayanan Buddhism.Through her relationship with the Lotus Born master, Guru Rinpoche, and through her own realization, she created a profound and dynamic style of Vajrayana practice that transcends time, gender, and culture.A spiritual mother guiding both men and women, this remarkable manifestation of enlightenment awakens the true ultimate nature and brings limitless enlightened activity into the world for the benefit of all beings."Know the Dakini to be your own mind". Khungpo Naljor.Yeshe Tsogyal (777-837 A.D.) was born to the princely Kharchen family. At her birth spring of fresh water burst from the ground and formed a pond next to her house. This pond came to be known as 'Lha-tso', the divine lake. Later the spot became a famous pilgrimage site for generations of devotees.Yeshe Tsogyal was brutally raped by her first suitor and fought over by her second. When she fled from them, she was captured and placed in the Emperor's harem. Later the Emperor offered her as a consort to Guru Rinpoche.Guru Rinpoche set her free, and she became his disciple at age 16. When she received empowerment her flower fell on the sacred mandala of Vajrakilaya and through practicing the sadhana she rapidly gained accomplishment. She then received all of the Guru Rinpoche's teachings and became his spiritual heir. She travelled all over Tibet with her Precious Guru, blessing particular locations and depositing treasure-texts for the benefit of future beings. She went into meditation retreat in 796 and did not come out until 805, after her great Guru had already left Tibet. She finally emerged as fully enlightened Buddha. Possibly in 837, but perhaps later, she transcended worldly existence, ascending to the Sacred Red Mountain, the luminous Buddhafield of her root lama Guru Rinpoche.Jamgon Kongtrul speaks about Yeshe Tsogyal!!!In his Ocean of Blessings, Jamgon Kongtrul states that the Lady Yeshe Tsogyal appeared in Tibet as an emanation of Dhatvishvari Vajra Yogini and was essentially not different from the consorts of the five buddhas. In her dharmakaya aspect, she is known as Samantabhadri Prajnaparamita. in her sambhogakaya level, she manifests in the form of the great consort Dhatvishvari and therefrom she displays an inconceivable number of nirmanakaya appearances however it way is necessary to guide beings to enlightenment. In the pure lands she appears in the form of Sarasvati, Noble Goddess of Eloquence, where she shows the skillful means for generating the light of wisdom in all aspects of knowledge, both the outer and inner levels of philosophy. In the presence of Buddha Shakyamuni, she emanated in the form of Ganga Devi and acted as the custodian of the treasury of the Mahayana teachings. In the snowy land (of Tibet), she took rebirth as a qualified dakini into the family line of the Kharchen clan and became a consort accepted by Guru Rinpoche.By the power of her immense training, she accomplished perfect recall. Traversing the secret path of Vajrayana, right to the letter, she achieved the supreme vajra abode of the twelfth bhumi. Perfecting the great power of realization of the natural Great Perfection, she arrived at the stage at the end of the four visions.Acting as the offciial compiler of Guru Rinpoche’s teachings, she traveled with him everywhere in the central and surrounding lands of Tibet and concealed innumerable major and minor treasures..At the moment, she resides in her rainbow body's indestructible form in the Palace of Lotus Light on (the continent of) Chamara. Indivisible from the never-ending adornment wheels of Guru Rinpoche's body, speech, mind, qualities, and activities, she pervades throughout the reaches of space to benefit beings for as long as conditioned existence exists. The Long Transmission of the Lineage (Kama Lineage)The transmission of the teachings are passed down through a line of lineage masters. The origin of this transmission begins with the transmission of the enlightened teaching from the dharmakaya and sambhogakaya to knowledge holders (vidyadharas). Then, these individuals, or vidyadharas, who appear on earth such as Padmasambhava transmit the teachings to human beings. In 817, King Trisong Deutsen (790-858) requested the master Padmasambhava to come to Tibet. This invitation was due to the advice of the Abbot Shantarakshita. The Abbot knew that Padmasambhava would help the spread Buddhism in Tibet, and subjugate the malignant forces and obstacles that were preventing it.Under the direction of the King, the Abbot and Padmasambhava, the first monastery in Tibet (Samye Monastery) was constructed. Also, the teachings and sutras were translated from Sanskrit to Tibetan.Padmasambhava, known as the precious teacher or Guru Rinpoche, had twenty five main disciples, the foremost being lady Yeshe Tsogyal. They all became accomplished in extraordinary abilities. The translation of the tantras went underway and was done with great diligence and secrecy. Masters such as Vimalamitra, Buddhaguhya, Shantipa and Dharmakirti further enriched the transmission of the dharma from India to Tibet at this time. From the heart of Buddha Amitabha, light rays radiated into the bud of a lotus on Danakosha lake.Upon its ripening, appeared an amazing child, adorned with the major and minor marks sitting atop a thousand petalled lotus.Glorious Guru Padmasambhava, please protect and guide me until I attain complete enlightenment.Wherever there is space, five elements pervade, Wherever the five elements, the homes of living beings, Wherever living beings, karma and defilements, Wherever is defilement, my compassion also. Wherever is the need of beings, there I am to help them.
