About Me

Born August 2, 1977 in Hamburg, Philipp loves music and plays contrabass and electric bass. He got early musical training and had various instruments at home. After starting out on classical guitar at the age of 12 he switched to electric bass at 16. At 18 he began playing sessions and concerts around the Hamburg area and picked up the contrabass at 20. After school and civil service he studied jazz and classical music at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. From that moment on he has been making a living as a jazz, entertaining and improvising artist playing acoustic and electric, structured and free, traditional and experimental, onstage or offstage, in or outside the studio. Being a performer primarily he sometimes writes music and teaches by request. While never leaving Hamburg as a hometown Philipp traveled a lot and experienced a wide range of musical surroundings and styles from solo contrabass to symphony orchestra, from classical to funk and performed and recorded with countless artists including notables such as Herb Geller, Wolfgang Schlüter, John Schröder, Geoff Keezer, Gary Husband, Joshua Redman, Horacio Hernandez, Danny Gottlieb, Jeff Ballard, David Schnitter, Bobby Shew, John Marshall, Ack van Rooyen, Bud Shank, Walter Norris, Anthony Wonsey, Lew Soloff, Billy Harper, Eric Alexander, Howard Johnson, David Kikoski, Iganz Dinne, Johannes Lauer, Sam Yahel, Lennie Cuje, Gary Campbell... Currently Philipp works with different groups and artists in Germany like: Das Hammerklavier Trio (boris-net.com), Florian Trübsbach Groups (truebsbach.de), Herb Geller Groups (herbgeller.com), Wolfgang Schlüter Quartet (skiprecords.com), Milla Kay (millakay.de), Torsten Goods (torstengoods.de), Trio Connex (lutzbuechner.de), Buggy Braune Groups (buggybraune.de), Eisenrot (eisenrot.de), Arnim Silwar Dreamband (arnim-silwar-melody-jazz.com) and leads a quartet combining Das Hammerklavier Trio and Saxcat. He received the Langner-Foundation-Jazzprize 2008 for young musicians in Hamburg and is at the moment writing material for his first record as a leader. On wednesday nights Philipp performs with many different guests at the Ponybar in Hamburg.
