Mariachi, duh...Old black and white movies from the 30's/40's era both U.S. and Mexico: Golden Era/Epoca de Oro. Maria Felix/Katherine Hepburn etc...gardening: tomatoes
From my friend Laura, Colleages/Compañeros: In the early 1950's there were three all-female mariachi groups in Mexico City: Las Coronelas, Las Adelitas and Estrellas de Mexico. The groups booked long tours throughout Mexico, Latin America and the U.S. Some of the surviving members of these groundbreaking groups are still performing mariachi music. I am calling these women the "Pioneras Mexicanas." I had the honor to meet with surviving members of Mariachi Las Adelitas, Las Coronelas and Estrellas de Mexico (formerly Mariachi Michoacano) in Mexico City in late August 2007. The eldest of these women is in her mid-70s. Their continued commitment and passion for mariachi performance has amazed me. Their anecdotes and experiences are living history. The talent amongst these women is phenomenal. They, themselves, have become excited at the opportunity to share their stories and their music before they are 'too old.' As they told me, "don't take too long, we don't have a lot of time!' Although they represent three different all-female groups from the 1950's, they have been collaborating as one, musically, since August, practicing as a group and preparing for a performance tour in the U.S. I am reaching out to you to see if any of your college/high school programs in Ethnomusicology, Latin American studies, Oral History, or other mariachi music related departments, might be interested in sponsoring the group for a panel presentation/musical presentation. I wanted to get the word out before the end of the year, honestly before everyone's budgets are spent, and in order allow time to proficiently process visas etc. Please enjoy the following video link, a sort of teaser of what could follow. http://www.moonyoz.com/mujeresdemariachi/videos/Pioneras.wmv For those expressing interest, a more formal packet proposal will be provided. Please, if you have any other ideas of how we can expose these women to both academia and mariachi festivals, send feedback to me as soon as possible. In addition, I am very interested in having them receive some recognition for their over-40 years of dedicated performance with mariachi music, as with a Mariachi Hall of Fame, or....??
